Glasgow:Scotland with style?

Postby JamesMc » Tue Aug 24, 2004 1:40 pm

Well, according to this report in the ET(which is more or less a mouthpiece for the council and tourist board at times), the new slogan and branding is working. But is it really that slogan which is doing it? I thought it was a bit naff and also offensive when first unveiled, but are tourists really taking it in?

Opinions?

An opinion may be formulating.

But if anyone thinks it might be fun to do a send up of the campaign I have a suitable domain name registered which could be used for some web fun, games and satire.

I think it may have to be done. If only for the comedy value.

I must be too sheltered, I've not even seen this.

Can only echo the 'naff and offensive' view though

Imagine what we'd be saying if we were getting 'Edinburgh: Scotland with Style' shoved in our faces.

Looks like a cue for Sharon's handy domain

This is absolutley true and I haven't made it up.

Back in the 80's, when Glasgow's famous slogan

"Glasgow's miles better"

was invented by John Morgan, Dr. Michael Kelly or John Spears (whichever one of the "dodgier than a fly evading a good swatting" fellows you prefer to believe), Edinburgh decided they'd better have a go, too.

Their slogan?

"Edinburgh's slightly superior."

The morning after the night before - pics of Sauchiehall St especially after a bank holiday weekend, before the street cleaners have got there has got to be Glasgow with style.

What better a way is there of showing how we can party till dawn, chat up and then fail to get off with the one you had eyes on; order a donner pizza and then puke in any available doorway, before queuing for a taxi home who takes you home via bishopbriggs cause you've fallen asleep.

The puke is just a testament to the night before.

Yep, any shots of those Scotland with style lamppost banners flapping about miserably with nasty stuff in the background would be good. During recent high winds, one of them on one of the bridges across the Clyde was blown clean off. Heavy metal buckles, could have killed someone! Should have swiped it when it was lying in the road for mischievous photo opps.

Now of course, all of this isn't a dig at Glasgow herself, merely this ad campaign. Just in case anyone doubted our love of this fair city. :D

Glasgow autonomous project produced the 'nae mair pish' stickers and posters in parody of the 'scotland with style campaign, as can be read here:

This pic came together by accident, but i think it makes a good point. Neglected architectural heritage, the all seeing CCTV keeping an eye on the mean streets. Scotland with Style, of course :x

Even the 'Scotland with style' banner has a kind of abandoned look to it.

Glasgow: Scotland with Scabs

Glasgow: Scotland with Sores (Great big running ones)

Glasgow: Scotland with Scars

I could go on, and probably will.
