The demolition of Sighthill Park and it's stone circle

Postby mrsix » Fri Nov 30, 2012 4:32 pm

Looks like Glasgow City Council are planning to scrap Sighthill Park and it's stone circle to build yet another sports facility, this time for the Youth Olympics.

Good Grief

I don't want to rant.......well actually I do

With all that's being happening recently I think the cooncil has totally lost the plot altogether.

It would be interesting to know the thought processes on the planet City Chambers

Is there a link to any 'official' proposal to scrap Sighthill Park and the stone circle?

Thanks. I've been keeping an eye on Duncan's site for some time now but I still don't see any evidence of any possible plan to demolish the circle.

I'm not saying there isn't a plan, just that I don't see any evidence of one.

It'll probably be announced shortly after the close of the 'Consultation period'.

I contacted a few folk at the council and there are discussions on the fact. I've mobilised a wee army of Students through Student Tours Scotland (my tourism business) at www.studenttoursscotland.com and facebook.com/studenttourssco with some blogs and such.

The guys at the council were surprised by the moves and said it was more one group over another making decisions without consultation.

Don't get me wrong, I am very PRO the development at Sighthill but ONLY if the park is kept in some form (even halved) and ONLY if the stone circle is incorporated.

In that case there will be published minutes of those discussions.

How many brownfield sites are there in Glasgow, precisely?

I'm not an expert on Springburn by any means, but there is at least one stadium-sized rubble site within five minute's walk of anywhere I've ever lived in Glasgow. Where I currently live, there are at least two.

And for the purposes of clarification, I've never lived (in Glasgow) in anything other than a (statistically) deprived area.

That's rather the point I was making.

There are loads of possible sites all over Glasgow which would welcome a stadium sized redevelopment. Why pick this one?

I appreciate there's a proximity to the games village site but is there any reason why the Commonwealth Games stadia complex (complexes?) can't be used for the Youth Games (apart from Gordon Matheson's ego?)

Sir. You are clearly interested enough in politics to engage in, shall we say, 'active politicing' on this site alone. As such, please don't strain our credulity.

Thank you (I think).

For the record, I've known Duncan Lunan for about 40 years and the whole 'they're tearing my stone circle down' has his fingerprints all over it. He's one of the mots media savvy chaps I know (despite his fairly recent nuptials) and I wouldn't be at all surprised is this isn't just a ploy to promote his book.

No harm to him on that front but let's not lose any sleep just yet.

Yeah, I remember reading about some insane plan to link the Port Dundas Canal Basin to Buchanan Street using a ski-lift thing that seemed absolutely mind-bogglingly daft.

I've just spent the afternoon putting that point of view forward, so I hope you're right. And not just for that reason.

The problem, of course, is that it just sounds so precisely the sort of thing that GGC would do.
