Internet Cafes/Access in Glasgow

Postby donaldbane » Sat Sep 29, 2012 12:43 am

Wonder if anyone here can help me,It is history of Glasgow related. Im trying to prove to a friend that the order of Internet Cafes opening up in Glasgow was:

First: John Smiths Bookshop.
Second: The Internet Cafe, North Street.
Third: Java Cafe, Gibson Street/Park Street.

Do any of you have memories of these and can you attach dates to them?

Im all googled out, and can only find a date of 1996 for the Java Cafe.

Thanks in advance.

I would have thought the Internet Cafe in North Street was the first one.

One in Waterstones in Sauchiehall St was definately there in 1999 and 2000. I was always there in those days.

Java Cafe was definately there in 1997. I used it a lot whilst at college the first time.

The one in North Street was cool. Proper atmosphere.

:), I remember asking for a printout of an IRC conversation, cause I thought it was so cool.

And boasting that I had sent my mum an email (on oneof those nast 4637t46t@compuserve addresses),just to be deflated by my brother and law, who said why notjust phone.

They're divorced now,thank God.

Hey, can anybody guess at when they were in North Street? Ive a date for the Java Cafe, opening in 97. Would like to confirm it was before this. Can anybody relate using it to some life event you can date?

Then I need a date for john smiths that predates both. :( gonna be difficult.

Waterstones, thats kind of buggered things up for me. Does anybody know when that opened. I remember much fanfare at the time. Please say post 97.
