Don't have any details on the exact property affected but this has appeared on my twatter feed from the council

@GlasgowCC:

Sauchiehall St is closed between Charing Cross (Newton St) and Elmbank St due to a fire.

Apparently in a take-away outlet, though no note of which it might be.

Had this sent through from a friend, looks to be fairly close to the location of previous fire in that vicinity

No shortage of choice on that stretch. Let's hope nobody injured or hurt.

Hopefully. A bit unfortunate that it went up in one of the few dry hours of this summer. :|

Isn't that the same row of tenements that caught fire about a year ago, where Sauchiehall St at Charing X ended up closed for ages?

Yes - I can confirm Sauchiehall St has now re-opened

Five rescued from takeaway fire

Five people were rescued uninjured after a fire broke out in a city centre takeaway.

Firefighters were called to the Express Takeaway in Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow, at 21:40 on Tuesday.

On arrival, the crews encountered a well-developed blaze, with flames and smoke coming from the front and rear of the building.

Five people were led to safety from the three floors of occupied flats above the shop.

Ambulance crews also attended the incident but no injuries were reported. Firefighters remained at the scene for several hours cutting away fire damaged areas and to check for hidden fire spread.

A joint investigation into the cause of the fire is currently being carried out by Strathclyde Fire and Rescue and Strathclyde Police.

Just a clarification on this, as I don't think the BBC website report is quite accurate. The Express takeaway is a few doors along from where the fire was.

The block that went up is on the left side of Nice n Sleazy on Sauchiehall Street. Whole building is gutted and the building's shored up.

I can't be certain, but I think most of the building was derelict before the fire (I got the bus from the stop opposite, so spent hours staring at it the week before :) ) I'm wondering if the people who were rescued were in the block of Nice and Sleazy?

Anyway, it's gutted the building - right up into the roof space and along.

That's last years fire, the one which destroyed the TSB and the building above.

I can't vouch for the name of the takeaway which went up but it's to the right of Nice n Sleazy.

Well spotted!

In which case, there's bugger all damage been done!

They have started clearing the other building though. Couple of days after the latest fire, they've started clearing the interior of the left side block. That's what made me think it was that block that went up - there's been very little doing (as far as I've seen) on that site for a while.

I enquired at Lloyds TSB St Vincent St (where my Lloyds Charing Cross account was transferred) re plans to re-open the Sauchiehall St branch and was told it definitely wouldn't happen. The unofficial reason had to do with uninsured multiple owners of the flats above the bank.

Aye, I'm not surprised. From memory it was mostly student flats up there (a friend's now wife lived there when she was a student), like the rest of the flats along Sauchiehall Street now. I can imagine from the state of some of the other blocks in that area that the landlords didn't exactly run things above board. Downside of tenement living, I suppose- you can have so many different owners in one block, and no guarantee of how responsible each one would be.

It's a shame seeing such a big hole in the run of restaurants/bars/casinos though ::):
