The 25 Cross of Glasgow

Postby Gary Brown » Sun Jul 29, 2012 10:22 pm

Hey guys,

Sorry if this is posted elsewhere but I recently came across a copy of the William BARR book "Ghosts of Glasgow" which has the 21 Crosses of Glasgow tour. From looking around the city it appears a few are missing from the tour so I make it there are actually around 25 minimum. What I wondered is what remains in 2012 at these sites?

01 - St. James' Cross (St. James Road and Stirling Road in TOWNHEAD)
02 - Townhead Cross (Castle Street and Alexandra Parade in TOWNHEAD/ DENNISTOUN)
03 - Springburn Cross (Cowlairs Road and Springburn Road in COWLAIRS/ SPRINGBURN)
04 - Possil Cross (in HAMILTONHILL)
05 - Saracen Cross (Saracen Street in POSSIL)
06 - Charing Cross (CITY CENTRE/ ANDERSTON/ PARK/ GARNETHILL)
07 - Victoria Cross (Dowanside Street and Byres Road in HILLHEAD)
08 - Partick Cross (Dumbarton Road and Byres Road in KELVINHALL)
09 - Anderston Cross (ANDERSTON)
10 - Govan Cross (GOVAN)
11 - Cessnock Cross (Edwin Street and Paisley Road West in CESSNOCK)
12 - Albert Cross (Kenmure Street and Albert Street in POLLOKSHEILDS)
13 - St. Andrews Cross (GORBALS OUTSKIRTS)
14 - Victoria Cross (Allison Street and Victoria Road in GOVANHILL/ QUEENS PARK)
15 - Strathbungo Cross (Pollokshaws Road and Allison Street in STRATHBUNGO)
16 - Shawlands Cross (SHAWLANDS)
17 - Gorbals Cross (GORBALS/ LAURIESTON)
18 - Bridgeton Cross (BRIDGETON)
19 - Parkhead Cross (PARKHEAD)
20 - Kings Cross (Duke Street and Bellgrove in DENNISTOUN)
21 - Glasgow Cross (CALTON/ MERCHANT CITY)
22 - Anniesland Cross (ANNIESLAND)
23 - St. Georges Cross (COWCADDENS)
24 - Alexandra Cross (Duke Street and Cumbernauld Road in DENNISTOUN)
25 - Finnieston Cross (FINNIESTON/ CRANSTONHILL)

You could argue Farme Cross in RUTHERGLEN was a cross as it was under Glasgow from 1975 to 1996.

Any others too?

Useful list Gary, thanks. There was a Cowcaddens Cross, long gone now but there is a commemorative plaque on the multi-storey block nearest Maitland St. (see link) There was a Maryhill Cross too. (see Glasgow Guide link for photo) Queen's Cross is still there, worth a visit for the McIntosh building and an ice-cream at Jaconelli's.
Note also that St. George's Cross is in North Woodside, not Cowcaddens.

Durachdan,

Eddy

Good to know. Be nice for Glasgow City Council or someone to produce a wee walking heritage trail like the Merchant City one that covers old stuff no longer there.

Add Shettleston Cross to the list : junction of Darleith Street / Wellshot Road and Shettleston Road.
