Scotthiggy,
You made a post, dated 27 Dec 2009, where you mentioned bullet-holes in the high wall of Duke Street prison, where it stretches from High St to Duke Street. Well, I was walking up High Street towards the Royal Infirmary today, and unbelievably there are workmen there and they are pulling that wall down. Three quarters of it is already demolished! There is a digger there as well. ...The wall I mean is about a hundred or couple of hundreds yards east of Burrells Lane.

I was sure they would leave this wall untouched for historical reasons.

I went down this afternoon out of morbid curiosity , half thinking that there must have been some mistake.

But, no.

Have you checked the National Archives of Scotland site, as mentioned previously?? - just put here name into the search and see if it finds anything.

A damned shame... Where the Hell are Historic Scotland in these matters? A six-foot-mutant flea should be deposited in the ear of City Chamners!

She may have dodged the census returns - some suffraggists made sure they were not at home or hid when the enumerator called and were made an example of by imprisonment.

Going Off Topic....

Except Emily Wilding Davi(d)son who hid in a cupboard off the Chapel at
Westminster Hall in the Houses of Parliament in London that night, so that
she would be registered at Westminster.

Sorry for coming late into this one and resurrecting an old thread, but I am new here and simply doing a bit of catch up.

I was passing the site of the old Lamppost pub one day a few weeks back and I saw that on the new building site there was a Police presence and also saw that work had stopped on the site. Curiosity overtook me and I stopped for five minutes or so to watch what was going on. In the time I was there little actually happened except a copper was poking the disturbed ground with a stick.

I have absolutely no idea what the outcome of this Police presence was but I guess that perhaps the lads digging new foundations came across something that disturbed them. Perhaps human remains? Was there ever burial grounds there relating to Duke Street Prison I wonder? Could there be something in relation to the much forgotten "Battle of the Bell of the Braes?"

Or was it someone's cat that was buried there?

I guess I will never know now.
