Video Shop Memories

Postby bAzTNM » Mon Jul 16, 2012 6:35 pm

Right, remember "Azad Video" in Bridgeton?

My old pals' dad got a video out for his wee sister. Pals dad gets back home and finds out they've gave him famed porno "Eleven Days, Eleven Nights" by mistake. As you can imagine, he wasn't too happy. She was only five or something.

Goes back to the video shop and a big verbal argument starts and ends with pals dad throwing the tape at the Pakistani guy. Pakistani guy chases him out the shop with a baseball bat and bans him. Pals dad wasn't a gangster or anything.

Couple of days later, he's walking in Bridgeton Cross and gets bundled into a car by a bunch of Asian lads. Taken up to near Cathkin Braes and takes a right good punching and kicking for his "argument" with the old guy. It was in the paper up here. Really nasty. He was ok though.

Once it got in the papers, that particular branch seemed to close rather quickly. Must have been 1989 or 1990. Oh well.

Might as well ask a question too. Are there any shops in Glasgow that sell VHS? Any charity shops have a lot in the collection? Obsessed with collecting them. Thanks a lot!

The second hand vinyl shop on Park Rd had loads of VHS last time I was in. Charity shops seem to have stopped stocking them as they take up too much shelf space/ £ return.
I hear the people sing.

Those who have been influenced by Mary Portas have dropped VHS along with cassettes and vinyl but there's still some that keep them all. Usually for quite a long time.

Now if I could only recall a racist incident to embellish the above.
"I before E, except after C" works in most cases but there are exceptions.

Know the one your on about. Bought a boxing video out of there about five years ago and the guy behind the counter was going off his nut about how I can enjoy such a barbaric sport. He went on a full blown rant. He almost threw the change at me.

I was in that shop in Park Road once too, around 1998 - mate and I were just looking for an aerial extension lead, but had to wait whilst the guy got off the phone from discussing several, er, interesting titles with the chap on the other end. "Pump my Pink Pussy" is the only one I can remember now...

World of Video\DVD Exchange at the Saltmarket is like that too. I wouldn't be surprised if pornos are being filmed there too. Tart looking girls always get led into the back where the big collection must be. Vibe is always pretty nasty. I think its been raided a few times.

I was in Shelter's shop on Gt Western Rd today (near to Byres Rd) and they had a stand with lots of videos - number of older films (i.e. ones that I recognised as I'm not up to speed with newer films :) ) e.g. Grease, The Quiet Man, The Full Monty etc Not sure what else they had as I just had a quick glance and that was ones that I recognised

Just remebered this one.

Was standing a video shop during the 80s looking at what to get when a teenager came in and asked the assistant.

"Mrs, you got Fredy Krugers day aff" the assistant replied, "no son, but we've got Alligator Aberdeen". ::):

There was (is?) a video shop in Pollokshaws Road near a garage and bike shop. Was in there in the very early 80's and came across a Star Trek VHS that we didn't recognise the cover of, so got it.

Stuck it in the player to be confronted by 'And now on BBC2..." - it was 3 episodes taped off the telly. 8O

That shop sounds like Azad video who had a branch in Kirkcaldy and in Dundee bought a bond film in the Kirkcaldy shop and Nurse on Wheels in the Dundee shop, as regards charity shops most have stopped video tapes and the price they charge for dvd is just usually a pound or two less than buying a new copy online with free postage an example goldfinger heart start shop price 4.99 online price £3.99 free postage and both were the special edition double disc issue.
As for the tapes i used to buy Friends tapes and use them as tapes for recording on as on longplay usually got just over 3 hours recording time, i hardly tape anything these days as most of the films are constant repeats over and over again and also we now have c4+1 and itv+1 so if you miss the start of a prog or film its on an hour later.
Only time i tape anything is if am going out stick a tape in set record and set the reminders on the epg for the progs i want and leave it to record away.

Azad was a Scotland-wide chain, was it not? I used the one in Cambuslang, and it even features in Trainspotting!

Lots of wee independent video shops in the early-mid 1980s that I remember, then a few chains like Azad and Ritz.

I remember going into the Saltmarket one as well, when it was just World of Video, years ago. Got into a conversation about films with the chap behind the counter, we both liked trashy exploitation rubbish - he showed me a secret stash in the back of video nasties, which had been illegal to sell or rent since the Video Recordings Act of 1984. Prices were crazy, about 40 quid a pop!

Amusingly, the Video Recordings Act turned out to be invalid after some mistake in its implementation, was only discovered and rectified about 18 months ago! And now that the BBFC are much more lenient anyways, you can pick up such films uncut on DVD in Tesco for three quid - films that would have seen their retailers up in court 25 years ago...!

I mind the BP station on Mearns Road in the 80's do video rentals then Ritz opened up at Mearns X a few years before Ritz became Blockbuster. I think I remember the Haddows at Clarkston Toll did video rentals and also rented out Atari VCS consoles with a game.
