London Road is falling down

Postby Monument » Tue Jan 17, 2012 5:57 pm

London Road has been closed since Friday lunch time, due to a dangerous building. The restricted area has been narrowed down so that most of the shops have opened again (but a few still closed). Demolition of 594 London Road is about to commence. I believe a few folk were allowed in today to collect their things. Word on the street is that the proprietors of the corner shop had removed some steel supporting beams during expansion of the shop. It is sad loss of a building, which will leave a big hole in the middle of the village. I am, however, enjoying the traffic free environment for the time being. Some pics below.

If you look at Google Maps, you can see that the building has been neglected - the dreaded killer buddleia sprouting out in a couple of places

There's a bad bit in me that says Brigton being the evil place that it is I wouldn't really care if it all fell down.

Christ, it really has sagged - if the beam story is true, you have to wonder what on earth they were thinking - that someone had just installed them for decoration??

Which shop caused it? Was it the Day-Today or the Titan?

I wouldn't be surprised. It nearly happened in the block I live in when a restaurant was being renovated. Fortunately someone realised and the police were called. There were workmen there all night putting in emergency supports. Fortunately nobody needed to be evacuated. Such a shame this block wasn't so lucky.

Does renovation work not require a building permit? or do they just procede as they see fit? Looks like there has to be a change in this area.

I have some information which seems more reliable than the word on the street. Apparently the movement in the building was caused by an internal pipe leading which undermined the foundations. This makes sense, as the shop downstairs was stinking of damp for the past couple of months. Residents have been allowed in for their stuff, as there had been break-ins. I am told the building was regularly raided by the police looking for illegal immigrants. The owners of the building have 28 days to take action before the council steps in, so it seems we could be a traffic free zone for a while longer.

The road closures are overkill. They could have opened up Olympia St to all traffic (not just buses & taxis), but no, the whole bloody cross is closed.

If that happens then I will be very surprised as the building is way way gone.
