I was passing on the bus so I couldn't get a great look, but I could swear the boarded up tenements on Colebrooke St near Kelvinbridge, were leaning backwards.
Optical illusion ? I hadn't been drinking.

How did you get a bus today? Do you have your own?

I saw them on Friday, only got round to asking today

Just had a look on Streetview and they appear to be out of plumb, or as we say in the trade, "on the piss".

It is not an illusion. There is serious subsidence in this particular area, caused apparently by ancient mineworkings going back to the late 18th / early 19th C. It has been a problem for years. The tenement on Great Western Road went first, followed about twenty years ago by the terraced houses at the lower end of Belmont Street (sad for me as I lived in one of them as a wee boy in the 1950's). Now it is obviously the turn of the closes in Colebrooke Steet.

For the sake of those who live in the replacement housing put up in Belmont Street and on GWR, I just hope that the ground was properly stabilised first.

Glasgow Academy has bought those tenements and will be demolishing them to build a new science building on the site.

I didn't know that, but it doesn't really surprise me. The Academy already has the top half of Colebrooke Street, which also used to be residential. No doubt they got these tenements cheap considering the state they're in (not so nice for the erstwhile owner-occupiers). But I imagine it will cost a bundle to stabilise the site before building can start.

Yep. We're talking a vast amount of concrete injection.

The top half of Colebrooke Street was townhouses on one side and Academy buildings on the other side (at least in my memory). They have owned several of those town houses since the 1950s and acquired the rest in the interim.

Apparently the science building is a project that they were planning for several years hence. But, with the economy being what it is, contractor tendering prices are currently very competitive so they are looking at the possibility of making a start sometime in 2012.

Some of the stories from before the war are interesting.

Planning Consent has been given for the new Glasgow Academy Science and Technology Block in Colebrooke Street. So the leaning tenements of Colebrooke Street will soon be no more.

After over 130 years of existence the tenements started to lean more when under the scrutiny of the Structural Engineer for the new Project.

Not anything to do with anything, but my Maw used to do a lot of cleaning for schools and still considers the Glasgow Academy children the cheekiest, most rudest she has ever encountered.

My daughter attended there (feck all to do with me, btw!) and I have to say yer maw's not wrong!!
