I remember Jackson the Tailor, they had shops in the city centre, a bit like Burtons and how about Brighter Homes they had decorating shops about Glasgow. You also had Grants furniture shop in Jamaica Street, everyone went there for their first 3 piece suite (I was the store manager) and what about Habitat, when it opened everyone crowded in just to buy mugs !! and you had Cecil Gee the mens shop, it was all the rage for trendy young guys (like me :))

Chelsea Girl, was agreat shop for fellers, my current girlfriends at that time used to shop there and I would sit on the wee chair watching others trying out their outfits beyond the saloon doors, I could see for myself the top and bottom thirds and it was a challenge to imagine or effect a way of viewing the troso.

C'mon I was only fourteen, fifteen, seventeen and more recently thirty seven at Bravissimo!

I must have been sitting beside you! I remember being in a shop in Maryhill Road and a girlfriend at the time went in to try something on, the curtain wasn't made of thick material and everyone in the shop could see her changing and the outline of her terrific figure. It was amazing the amount of men who would volunteer to go into that shop with wives, girlfriends and happily wait whilst they were in the changing room....

What does Sgian mean?
Dubh I take it is black as in Dublin?

I can't see anyone's answered this for you Bridie; "sgian" or "sghian" is knife or blade, and "dubh" is indeed black - apparently, it can also mean "hidden", as in hidden within the stocking/sock I suppose.

Anyway, I am Wee Harry by the fact that my dad was Big Harry one of nine kids from the Gorbals Cross in the 1930's

He toid me once he took up smoking at 8yrs old, gambling at 10yrs old and winchin wimmin at 12yrs old, he then went on to say he was not 100% sure of this but it was any one of those activities at any one of those ages!
