I think Belmont were an Edinburgh company who had most of their sites in the East of Scotland and that might have been their only West of Scotland branch.

I remember Prossers in St Georges Rd, it had a wooden vehicle lift that went up to the floors above from street level.

The other one I remember was Milngavie Motors when they built on the site of the Star cinema (I think it was), just along Maryhill Rd at Bisland Dr. They then moved out to Temple and their showroom was flattened for flats.

There was a Ford dealer at the bottom of Elmbank St, but I can't remember their name (perhaps Skellys), my Dad bought his 1964 Ford Corsair (BGB 102 B) from them and every Sunday we'd walk down to look at it in the showroom as he waited for his HP to clear.

Callandars had a tiny showroom on Gt Western Rd near Goodies at the Botanic Gardens - they sold expensive cars such as Aston Martins. 8)

Ninian Sanderson's in Gt Western Rd daughter had the registration number LUC 1 E - worth a bob or two back then as well I'd imagine.

Ross Motors had a motorcycle shop in Gt Western Rd, just up from St Georges X.

Scottish Motor Services had two showrooms at Charing X, both opposite each other. The one which is gone now was where the father, Mr MacKinnon used to sort old classics and then put them up for sale. I still remember seeing a little fireplace at the back where he had the fire roaring up the lum as he fettled an old MG TA. They were the agents for the Clan Crusader in Glasgow back in the 1970's.

Tomkins on Edinburgh Road in Springboig - Vauxhall garage which is now a base for a taxi company. When I was a kid we always used to go to Skellys first at Alexandra Park to look at the Fords (which is still there, it became Trust Motors, then Reg Vardy now it is Evans Halshaw), then we'd drive along to Tomkins to look at the Vauxhalls.

If I remember correctly there was an Archers next door or further along (Lada/Hyundai dealer - :)), they retreated back to their native Edinburgh I believe and they now do Hyundai.

Bob Rae on Shettleston Road (directly opposite Eastbank Primary School) was a Nissan dealer, it was taken over by AFG and then it shut. The building is still there, it became a JobCentre Plus, then the offices for Shettleston Housing Association. It is lying empty again.

And who could forget Peat Road Motors - every Lada in Glasgow seemed to be sold by them! I found this on YouTube and after that couldn't get the jingle out of my head!!

There is an Archers in Airdrie. I wonder if it is the same company?

Another one I've just remembered is in Mount Vernon, when I was a kid in the early 1980s it was a Volvo garage which used to stretch all the way along Kenmuirhill Road from London Road to Hamilton Road (facing the Woodend pub) originally there was a covered used car lot on the Hamilton Road side, and the new car showroom on the London Road side.

The canopied bit was demolished in the 1980s and they built a housing development over it, then the showroom changed to Nissan, then latterly Skoda - now the whole lot is wiped out and it is just housing all the way now (Kenmuirhill Gardens).

I remember that showroom if you mean the one at the corner of Thurso St & Dumbarton Rd when it was Peter Holmes, a BL dealer - but that's going back a while.

Yep, you're right about the Archers garage - my Dad bought his Lada there in the 1980s. Can't remember when that closed. The Vauxhall garage was opposite the Taxi base - I'm almost certain because I was driving a Tigra in 2004 and had to get parts from there, which was long after Glasgow Private Hire moved in. I think they took over where Archers used to be. And now there's no garages there - even the Esso garage has gone from there.

And the muppets at Trust Motors sold my my an Austin Metro in the 1990s - total pig in a poke which she lost a packet on when she couldn't pass her driving test. It's OK now - looks almost classy now they've got rid of the Budget Tyres garage on the corner.

It's a different Belmont - this one was not the big company in Edinburgh, but Belmont Autos who were an independent used car dealer (rather dodgy one, remember they appeared a few times in 'The Judge' consumer column in the Sunday Mail a few times....) They extended their main branch in Tollcross (on the corner of Tollcross Road and Amulree Street) and closed the one in Tradeston down - they are still there, nowadays they specialise in Jap imports.

Parker Brothers out at Stepps were I think Fiat agents. The showroom is now in use as a supermarket.

My dad bought a Fiat Uno 60s from PRM back in 1988, before I was born. The car is long since scrapped, but I still have the old blue service wallet with 'PRM' on the front. It states that they sold Fiat; Lada; Opel and Vauxhall cars (as well as one other make which I forget, as I don't have the service book to hand).

The other PRM franchise was Austin and Rover cars. I found an article stating that they were to open a Toyota outlet in Paisley in 1990 but it never happened.

I also read a couple of articles which said they had branches in Hillington and Kilmarnock which I can find no trace of.

Anyone remember Lylesland Garage on Espedair Street in Paisley who sold Vauxhall/Opel before closing and AC opened the big Linwood VX site. It wouldve shut down when I was about 4 yr old but obviously have no recollection of it and even driving down the street can't see where it wouldve been.

Also County Motor Garage in Johnstone or Ferguson of Renfrew both also Vauxhall/Opel dealers???

Any memories of old dealers are mainly the huge Clanford site taking up both sides of the road in Lonend in Paisley. And Wylies on Pollokshaws road and Queens/Arnold Clark also on Pollokshaws road at a time when the service, workshops and parts dept were in the same building as the showroom/used car forecourt as opposed to down Nithsdale Drive where they are now.

There really were Ford/Vauxhall dealers on every street corner back in the early 90s. :)

Final memories are of Arnold Clark on Peat road (former PRM site) when it was a Proton dealer. And Arnold Clark Renault on Pollokshaws road/Haggs road when it was still AFG/Caledonia.
