Westcars - Crow Road - Saab and Colt (now called Mitsubishi)
Westcars - Barrhead Road - Audi, Nsu, VW.
Brian Coyle one of the owners of Westcars won the London to Sydney Marathon Rally with Andrew Cowan in a detuned Hilman Hunter

Merilee Motors - Merilee Road - VW

Jim Watt - Garrioch Rd - Citroen (Yes the World Champion boxer)

Skellys - Cumbernauld Rd - Ford

Melvins - Finniston St - Roots

Callanders - Kirklee Road - Mercedes, Auto Union

Prossers - Provanmill Road - BL, Rover

Gaulds - Paisley Road West/Mosspark Bvd - Rolls Royce

Hampden Cars - Carmunnock Road - A strange mix - Mazda, Lotus, Wartburg, Polski Fiat.

Stirling Cars - Carmunnock Road - Honda and Opel.

Ross Motors - Woodlands Rd - Mazda, Wartburg and Polski Fiat on the ground floor and you went up the stairs of the close to find them selling Triumph, BSA and Matchless motorcycles. Up another flight of stairs and that was the parts dept. On the top floor were the offices. Yes It was a tenement and the eccentric Polish owner was using the flats above the showroom to keep his business together in the one place.

I think I will stop there but I have lots more to share. I am working on a wee project on the motoring heritage of Glasgow from the earliest cars of 1890 just after they were invented. These are just a few of the more recent motor dealers that have sprung up in my motoring meanderings. Will post more when I get the chance but if anyone can contribute to this research please do. I would appreciate it.

dont think jim watt's on garrioch rd was a citreon dealer, they did loads of work on them for the dealer on great western rd.It was called kirklee auto's before jim watt bought it over and they had a colt dealership for a wee while before they sold it,i used to work there about 1977 :D

It's funny seeing Hampden cars mentioned because I worked there as a salesman in the late 70's and it was a great wee garage. It was owned by Joe McCambridge and the sales manager was John Green. The used cars were all stored in a basement area and every morning my first duty was to drive the cars out and line them up neatly against the pavement next to the garage and then put the signs on the roofs :) then at close of business move all the cars back into the basement again. We had a lot of fun but we worked hard and sold lots of cars. The good old days !!
Ahm entitled to my opinion as well

A bit like small shops versus supermarkets, the day of the small independent car dealership seems to have gone, replaced with big multi francises like Evans Hallshaw, Parks etc.
You can still find small mechanic only places and I now tend to use them as the big dealers only seem interested in the 'fleet' work and charge accordingly. The smaller independently owned workshops seem more interested in customer service.

Yeah - Wylies were on Pollokshaws Road as well not far from Eglinton Toll, that one is gone though I think.

My dad got his first Cortina from Wylies, back in 1973!

My dad got his first Transit van from there, round about that time. Came with wooden bulkheads. Before that it was Commer's he had.

Wow yeah the Commer vans - who remembers the dumpy old Commer (latterly Dodge) Spacevan that all the GPO/Telecom engineers used to drive - they were everywhere, and they looked so low to the ground with the track narrower than the bodyshell. As a kid in the early '80s used to remember Buzby painted on the side - usually an army of them parked outside the likes of Dial House and Marland House back in the day...

Fraser & Crawford off Crow Road next to Jordanhill Garden supplies. They went to Kirkintilloch as BL(?) Rover dealers as we had to go to Kirkie to get a service after they left Whittingham Drive.

Did Commers not have sliding doors like the old Bedfords?
