The Battle of Yoker - 1892

Postby yoker brian » Thu Sep 22, 2011 10:10 pm

You won't find any mention of this Battle in the history books.

So what am I talking about?

Whilst searching internet auction sites for Yoker related items - I came across a print entitled "1892 - Colliery Anderlues Belguim - Fight Yoker Glasgow" the print was from a British Victorian newspaper of the day and described an industrial accident in a Belgian Colliery and a hand drawn sketch the news paper was published on March 19th 1892.

The sketch didn't provide too much in the way of detail, but I was intrigued!

The Ferry Road Head Tavern was located at the corner of what is now Dumbarton Road / Kelso Street - where the Anchorage and Tenement Block are located.

After a bit of digging with the help of my friends at The Mitchell Library in Glasgow - trawlling through the newspaper archives I finally found my answer.

The Military Chiefs of the day wanted to practice fending off "hostile forces" and arranged what we would now call war games

The scenario had been that the hostile force had abandoned their seige of Glasgow after coming up against the forces garrisoned at Maryhill Barracks and were now in retreat to their base at Greenock, and that the forces of the Glasgow Garrison would track and capture or kill them.

A copy of the article can be downloaded in pdf format here

Not the first time there's been a battle in the vicinity of the Anchorage!

Well my original posts on this, has been reproduced verbatim in the community councils newsletter - Not credited to me or permission asked.

Not an unreasonable request, I would likely have said yes, but still it would have been nice to have been asked first.
