There are several sites where the remains of the cross river ferry terminals can be seen, The best preserved is a set of stairs for the pedestrian ferry near Finneston St.on the north side. These were restored several years ago as part of a landscape project, then quietly allowed to deteriorate. Finneston ferry terminal was moved from FinnestonSt beside the Rotunda to Lancefield Quay in 1936 to make way for a bridge. A certain A. Hitler caused the project to be cancelled, to be reinstated in 1980.
Other remains can be seen at Govan (south) Water Row. There is also evidence of the Clutha jetty here (a different topic ?)
At Kelvinhaugh the terminal is very evident but derelict. it's South side terminal (Stag lane) only the ramp is there, the stairs being long gone. On your next trip on the Waverly look out for these features. I was speaking with someone involved with the Glenlee and apparently the ferry was vandalised a couple of months ago and the repairs have delayed its being brought back into commission.

As to whether its going the be a river ferry again I don't know.

Forgive my ignorance, but this is the wee ferry that used to run from a dock down the lane opposite the Bells Bar in Govan Road (or, to put it another way, behind what was Kai Johansen's)?

Reply to the last two posts (I am one of the volunteer crew). At the moment (mid Oct) the ferry is out of the water in Rothsay Dock, for inspection and hull painting, There are a couple of issuses which need to be resolved before it goes back in the water. Hopefully we will be offering trips next summer. This is the last of the small passenger ferries which operated in Glasgow until 1980. Number 8 worked mainly the Kelvinhaugh to Stag lane route, sometimes known as Govan East. On retirement it was purchased by the Forth and Clyde Canal Society as part of the campaign to reopen the whole canal route. Called the "Ferry Queen" it provided trips on the canal. In 1996 it was sold to the present owner Clyde Maritime Trust and restored to its original configuration.
Two other hulls remain No2 is a rusting hulk in Rothsay Dock. No10 was on retirement turned into a floating restaurant, but this failed and now it is a craft shop at the Stables pub near Kirkintilloch (called "Craft daft on a raft")

Just to let you all know the Ferry no8 aka Kelvinhaugh is back on base beside Riverside museum. Extensive hull repairs and paint job done. Will be in use when weather improves but not as commercial vessel. may be open Wednesdays for looksee if you ask at ship, and volunteers aboard are not too busy.
