iPhone/Adroid app for old maps

Postby mpark » Tue Jun 28, 2011 3:59 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm one of the developers of a free (I'm not spamming :D ) iPhone and Android app called MakkaMappa. It allows anyone to turn any image into a GPS-enabled map for use on their iPhone, iPad and Android. You can find out more about it on makkamappa.com, but if you want a quick demo then you can go to http://makkamappa.com/maps/707 and click on Try It Out! You can then click anywhere on the Google map and see where you would be on the map of Glasgow in 1896. This is the position that the iPhone/Android would display if you were out with your device at that location. So, essentially, you can walk around 1896's Glasgow.

You can turn literally ANY image into a map, and we think it's perfect for using old maps of now-hidden buildings/tunnels/trainlines as real GPS-enabled maps. We've also had people upload old aerial photos, hand-drawn maps, and hundreds of others.

The app is available as a free (Lite) version, allowing you to download two public maps and any that you make on MakkaMappa.com, and there's a not-too-expensive paid-for version also. Both are available on the Android Market and Apple's App Store - just search for MakkaMappa.

Thanks for taking a look, and let me know if you have any questions!

I actually have this app on my iPad and a nice overlay courtesy of one of our other members who did all the hard work.

I'll start the ball rolling with a load of paid apps for free, I just thought I'd kick off a wee vault for those of us with Androidy bits (steady) to recommend (or slate for that matter) any apps of import that we try and like or find wanting.
