Maybe it's a "New Town" thing...

Must be.

My (new) town does it too. Gigha, Barra, Pladda, Mull, Lewis.... The other side of the road has Munro's or mountains, or whatever the hell they are.

My personal favourite is that bit of EK where the streets are all named after Shakespearian characters or associated actors etc.
There's a Street called simply "Falstaff" for instance and a row of terraced houses labelled "Saddler's Wells"

"Where do you stay yersel?"
"Oh, I live in Macbeth."
"What, actually in him? Ouch!"

theres quite a few streets in south glasgow that have a reference to Mary queen of scots due to the close vicinity to the battle of langside. off the top of my head, we have dundrennan rd, named after the abbey mary fled to after the battle. darnley st after one of her hubbys. lochleven rd. is so named because mary was held prisoner there. you could include the Fotheringay pub, Fotheringay was where Mary was sadly executed . im sure theres more streets with a Mary connection.

I paid a visit to the area today, but couldn't find much evidence of a street.

More of a parking bay than anything.

Aye, Abronhill was all trees. At least it helped you remember when you were pissed "driver its named after a tree!"

Photo gives it away to me - Langbank street was right beside the arches, set about 10 feet below street level with steps down to it, to give access to some of the arches.

If the photos faced the other way there may still be evidence of it (there were railings around it, and a street name sign on the support for the arches

Ah, spot on. I didn't think it was worthwhile taking photos of the arches, but there were a couple of steps down behind a gate on the railings, and what looked like it could have been Langbank Street at one point - but now filled in. I didn't see any signs for it, though.

Maybe it no longer exists?

Is there any way to find "stopping up of road" orders online?

Postby KMas » Wed Aug 18, 2004 1:03 am

I remember being told that Glebe St (Nr Royal Infirmary, not of The Broons, :)) was the shortest St in Glasgow.

Anyone know of a Malta St? I Think it was in the Gorbals before the rebuild

Its Malta Terrace that I saw today. Its one of the new built streets with the flying men hanging over the doors.

Glebe Street is still there Kmas, it used ti have a row of shops and a post office, with a small sorting office attached which is now a kilt hire shop.

A car park runs along glebe Street now.
Is this gonna be a standup fight, sir, or another bughunt?
