Postby Bridie » Thu Nov 11, 2010 8:16 am

I've just taken a virtual walk up Buccleuch Street and my 8O what changes

Tried to google anything about the name of the street but couldn't find

What is the meaning of the name and any connection to Glasgow?
Whats the Margaret McDonald House? (apart from being one of my old school extensions - however my names not Margaret McDonald) :D

and would you say it might be on the list of the most changed street after 40 years?

The street was most probably named for the Duke of Buccleuch. Carol Foreman, in her book, says that the street was named after the Duke, but gives no reason as to why.

I'll try to remember to look up the Muir book on Glasgow street names next week in the Mitchell. Or perhaps someone else has it?

The only Margaret McDonald that springs to mind is CRM's wife and collaborator in his artwork and design, and one of the 'Glasgow Girls'. However, it's not an uncommon name and could be someone else entirely.
