The backdrop is a pic of Ancient Athens not Roman because of the boats and mountains?

The Greeks didn't have rounded arches. Roman invention.

I think there is a prop on the stage as well. If you look at the upper centre below the trees and the man on the right he appears to be standing behind something.

morning :D

It's terribly tricky :D you can't even put the place to the people as it's a Hall and they could have hired it and came from anywhere so as a community of people it's hard to identify - I don't know if it's the pic but do they all look as though they maybe are, as said before, Greek/Turkish/Italian?

This thread is brill and also given the lack of pics for interiors of old Glasgow Halls makes you appreciate the amount of local knowledge and pictures on sites like these. :D

A gospel hall? Not sure if it's the famous Tent Hall, but there were others related to it. Could be a pulpit just visible in the pic. The mural looks very familiar-ish; either a copy of a well-known work, or maybe it just borrows classical themes. An Old Testament scene maybe?

btw, Robert, I'm not sure if your narrowing it down to Maryhill or Cathcart was a continuation of the long-standing HG joke or serious?

Could possibly be the cast of a play, and still in costume. As i said before the onlookers look to be dressed in a much later dress fashion. Is the small figure at the back maybe a ventriliquists dummy? Aslo the stage seems extremely high up? Loads of questions no real answers.

It would be an awful big cast for a wee stage, but not impossible. I would expect there to have been more musicians in that case, as well as the pipers. Also, if there were an orchestra of sorts, they would perhaps be posing with their instruments.

Are we sure it is not a Masonic gathering? The chap who was thought to be holding a trophy, but seems to have his hands behind his back, could the 'trophy' actually be some sort of masonic apron he is wearing? Although no further evidence, apparently.

Without more clues, I think we are sunk. The absence of interior shots of halls and suchlike really means that, unless one of us has actually seen the hall in question, or we are very lucky with photos, we are never going to be able to identify it. It could also have been demolished long ago.

Anyone doing a tour of all the possibilities on Doors Open Weekend?

A date would be helpful, because the circle around the gent in front is so perfect, I think the original premise that it could have come from a newspaper is worth a try.

I am almost certain it's not Masonic related the lack of regalia would suggest otherwise.I still think its some sort of object he is holding but it gets too blurred when blown up.Ach it's a mystery alright .........
