Mountains not Pyramids. The background looks Greek or Turkish to me as do the participants, pipers aside.

I think it maybe the 1901 or possibly the 1911Glasgow Exibitions. I have seen similar photos associated with these two events.

It looks Edwardian and dances would have been held in public halls then along with the usual concerts, weddings and talks. It's a wooden floor suitable for dancing and I'm sure that folding chairs would have been kept under the stage for the talks. Whilst balconies were a feature of later ballrooms such as the Locarno public halls had them too.
"I before E, except after C" works in most cases but there are exceptions.

Has anyone else noticed that there are no children in the picture?

Is the person sure that this is a wedding picture?

Would the Edwardians have children in the pics?

That thought had crossed my mind also, no luck with any similar photos though. :(

My 1st impressions were the Pavilion, but after looking at some of the images the stage is far too small in joes image, unless thers been modifications later on... its the seating boxes and ornate pillars that made me think that it might be here.

IS the man in front circled? or has he just been to the vet and had one of those lampshade things fitted over his napper to stop him chewing the bandage?

I'm thinking it's fairly small, based on the height of the balconies. I don't think there's a level above. The angle the balconies slope off at is fairly steep, though.

That also looks like natural light to me, so there's probably a glazed roof to the auditorium.

2hb : you've been spending too much time with the dug. That'll be 300 guineas, thank you.

after much deliberation I am in agreement with my fellow posters that it is not a theatre and more than likely a Hall.
How much importance is relevant to the backdrop remains to be seen.
I will endeavour to establish the nature of the picture potrayed and indeed if there is any relevance to a particular type of venue or function.

I think it's safe to say that it's not a wedding as there does not appear to be a bride. I think this is more likely to be a 'Burns' night or something similar, hence the pipers, held in what might have been a Masonic Hall; the possibilities appear to be endless at this time. If we knew the purpose of the function it would go a long way to working out the venue.

I thought Freemason/Masonic (don't know what they look like mind or the difference)
If you look at the fabric banners on either side of the balconies they seem to be held up in the middle by wooden crests - maybe commemerating something or with names on them?
