Strange structure on the cylce path near Cambuslang

Postby sonnyj99 » Wed Jul 28, 2010 6:50 pm

The is an old brick building, fairly small at the end the cycle path that runs alongside the clyde near to Cambuslang I think the area is. It's right next the the Glasgow East Investment Park so Google Earth tells me.

The building is farily small as has some sort of hoist type system outside it. The whole thing is fenced off so you can't get in or anything. I guess it must be river related, but not sure what it is. I have a few pictures of it, taken earlier this year but sadly i don't know how to post them on here.

Anyone have any clues?

Sound like a gauge station, they can measure the flow at different points across the river by using the pulley system to move the measuring instruments.

There is one on the Glazert Water, but it is at a weir, presumably as otherwise there wouldn't be enough water flow to measure, not an issue with the Clyde I would imagine!

I wouldn't have called this small but I'm guessing this might be what you are referring to.

This building has been there for as long as I can remember, however I've never seen any sort of activity in its vicinity so had assumed it was probably disused. Some maps refer to it as being a pumping station, though what it may have pumped I don't know.

I remember walking past it and think it to be a pumping station. There are a lot of similar structures on the Somerset levels which need pumping stations to keep the sea from swamping the place.

It is indeed a pump house, as marked on this map:

Cheers Ben

Do you know what its purpose was? Judging by the map, it doesn't appear to have been associated with Clyde Iron Works.

I'm not sure - it may have been a pump for cooling water for the ironworks. It does still seem to be in use, though, which would be odd.

Ive seen a scottish water van parked nearby recently. I always thought it was somehting to do with the iron works.
Is this gonna be a standup fight, sir, or another bughunt?

It's got nothing to do with Scottish Water, of that much I'm sure.

It is still a pumping statoin which pumps watefrom the Clyde to the Carbon Filter production factory which can be seen right behind it if you look towards London Road .(the big white chimney)It used to pump water to the "tubey" which was Stewart and Lloyds on Hamilton Road and Colvilles at Fullerton Road.

It pumped water into Stewarts & LLoyds tube works. I also understood it pumped water to Clydesmill Power Station.

Yep, I think that's the one being referred to BD. It's a Norit plant.

Well, it's not a mystery weed. That's one more to strike off the list. :)
