HG walk, Saturday 31st July 2010

Postby Josef » Fri Jul 23, 2010 6:37 pm

A tour of the greenbelt surrounding Cambuslang, Blantyre and East Kilbride

Highlights include :

Abandoned farms
Clyde and Rotten Calder paths
Lost mining relics, including a sort-of lost village
Old bridges
Abandoned quarries
WWII gun emplacements
Lost country houses
Firing ranges
ROC post
Views!
18th century dams
Transmitters
Railway stuff

There's not liable to be anywhere to stop off for food and drinks en route, and it'll be more or less an all-dayer, so bring picnic stuff and fortifying fluids.

Time and starting point TBA, but liable to be about 10 a.m. or so.

Rotten Calder path? How could I possibly resist. Sounds alluring, and all that 8)
All the world seems in tune on a Spring afternoon, when we're poisoning pigeons in the park.

Start and finish point at this stage will be, I think, Newton Station, served by two trains an hour on the Argyle Line and two going through the southside on the Kirkhill line.

Also can you use a Young Persons RailCard on the day it expires?

and can they be used all day at weekends?

You can, its valid until 2359 that night, and you can use a 16+25 railcard all weekend

AND at anytime during July and August

1. Can I use my Railcard at any time of day?

Yes you can. However, for all journeys made at or before 10 am Monday to Friday a minimum fare applies. (The exceptions are when you travel at weekends, on Public Holidays, or during July and August). If you travel regularly before 10 am, then a weekly or monthly season ticket may be more appropriate, though you won’t be able to get a Railcard discount). More information about minimum fares can be found at Tickets & Travel times.

The minimum fare is £12 return, usually if you ask for the YP discount and its greater than £12 after discount, you pay the price on the ticket, if its less than £12 the minimum fare can be invoked...usually you find people take it if their fare is about £11+

Good good, mine expires on Saturday and as I am now 25, nearly 26 I doubt I'd get a new one!

If you're only coming from Hamilton West, the fare shouldn't be much more than a couple of quid. From town, it's £2.55 single or £2.95 for a return (unless you buy it on the train, might be more expensive depending who you get!).

I should add it looks at this point as if work commitments mean the walk is being split into two, so this should be a much easier day, lasting only until around mid-afternoon.
