South Street Redevelopment

Postby The Big Man » Fri Dec 05, 2003 10:00 am

As most folks that stay in Glasgow are aware of the redevelopmenton the Glasgow clydeside mostly South Street and over the water in Govan were the new BBC will be built.

I heard rumors that there is to be a bridge from south st to Govan will this not cause more traffic? after all we do have the clyde tunnel why do we need a new bridge that will only cause moretraffic.

Apparentlythe new flats in South Street are going for £200.000 and they are not even built yet I know this cause my boss and owner of our company at work has bought one, with only the idea of makeing a profit well why not if you have the cash.

Geetings.

There was alot of talk about a new road bridge, although i'm not sure if anything was ever decided.

Meantime of course the decision has been made on the pedestrian bridge to link the Broomielaw and Tradeston. Another bendy bridge as is the fashion of our times. Hooray for lack of originality and for making a shortcut twice as long as it has to be!

I am moving to that area next week and am excited about the redevelopment plans (i quite like the bendy bridge design).

I have been reading about the m74 extension plans though and can't work out if it will be a good or bad thing? feeling is that the city planners have got it well wrong and us taxpayers will end up paying over the odds for it. anyone got any info on this?

Cheers, J

A quick search turned up http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/page.cfm?objectid=12547916&method=full&siteid=89488

"The four-lane bridge will arch 17 feet above the River Clyde between Finnieston Street and Govan Road."

Yeah the m74 seems a bit of a waste of time, that the extesion from the Kingston bridge is it not? If that were to go ahead they would have to knock down the whole of the gorbals which in the 1960's might have been a good idea but not now as its a very nice area now.

I dont really see the need for a m74 link road, whats wrong with takeing the cut off from the m8.

I think a new river crossing is definately needed. The Clyde Tunnel is closed half the time and need alot of work, and the Kingston bridge is, well, falling down.

I do like the look of that pedestrain bridge too.
Eighty percent of success is showing up.
