OLD CHURCH ON POLOKSHAWS ROAD..NOW FLATS NEAR ALLISON STREET

Postby thequeensparkranger » Wed May 05, 2010 7:01 pm

Hi there,

does anyone know anything about the age and history of this old church that was turned into private flats a few years ago? The carvings on the stonework around the main door include demons, green men, celtic knotwork, dragons and a whole host of other fabulous creatures and un christian symbolism.

I remember this site lying derelict for many years.........the spire/tower is quite something and is floodlit at night usually in pink..

it is across the road from the Arnold Clark showroom.

Cheers,

Originally Strathbungo Parish Church, built 1886-7. The architects were McKissack & Rowan. That's more or less all I know about it, although I remember it being derelict and used to wonder whether it would survive.

Useless fact I know but the reason it was derlict was it caught fire after it stopped being used as a church. My mate was one of the fireman at it when that happened. That was a good 20 years ago.
