The accomodation buildings are still intact, but there are proposals to demolish them, in spite of their listed status, and replace them with yet more overpriced rabbit hutches. There are two separate planning applications on the East Dunbartonshire Council website, which also allows objections to be submitted:

demolition of listed buildings, to allow for mixed use development incorporating new residential units, business space and care home with associated access, car parking and landscaping

mixed use development incorporating demolition of listed buildings, new residential units, business space and care home with associated access, car parking and landscaping

I've objected to the application to demolish on the grounds that the buildings are of architectural significance, and to the new housing development due to the fact that it will generate even more congestion on local roads which do not have the capacity for existing levels of traffic.

It would be very helpful for HG'ers who are concerned about losing these buildings to take the time to object.

Legitimate grounds for objection are:

Contrary to the Local Plan /Structure Plan
    Appearance ( Design , materials etc )
    Traffic, parking or access problems
Residential amenity eg noise, overshadowing etc
Effect on Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas
    Impact on natural environment

There's a link to the objections page at the bottom of each of the pages linked to above.

A support group has been set up to help architects through the "trauma" of seeing one of their creations demolished in their own lifetime.

The Rubble Club aims to draw attention to the number of buildings it believes are being torn down unnecessarily.
Parts of Notre Dame College of Education, which was latterly known as St Andrew's College, in Bearsden, was demolished in 2007 to make way for the new Bearsden Academy, despite much of it being category A listed.

Andy Macmillan, a former architect with designers Gillespie Kidd and Coia, said: "There's no reason why they couldn't convert the existing college which had excellent space and facilities including a swimming pool and gym.

"It seems to me odd that a building built in decent materials with maple flooring and Oregon pine finishes, should be knocked down. "

Thanks for these pictures. I did a year there in the late 80s, staying in Consuela, and they really brought back memories! It'll be a shame if they're allowed to go the way of St Peter's.

Firm bids to knock down old campus to build housing estate

A DEVELOPMENT company wants to knock down a row of disused listed buildings in Bearsden and replace them with a modern housing estate.

The A-listed residential blocks sit on a hill on the outskirts of the town and were once used by priests and students at the former St Andrew's College campus.
But most of the site - which houses the newly-built Bearsden Academy - has been empty since 1999.
Now Manchester- based Muse developments plans to demolish the disused buildings and build houses, flats, offices and a care home on the surplus land.

According to the local freesheet planning permission has been granted :( :( :( :( .

Another listed building bites the dust to make way for yet more badly-built barrat boxes and a granny farm :( .

I'm an ex italian student. I went to St Andrews College in the summer of 1996.
What about the teachers?
I remember Terry, Malcolm, John (Angus?), Kieran... I'd like to have news about them. Have you got some indications to give me?

Sorry for my bad english, but I didn't study it longer after my vacation. :(

Join Friends Reunited, search for Notre Dame college of education and put your message up on their bulletin board.

We know nothing about teachers.

The residential blocks may have been of architectural interest, but fuck me, they were ugly beyond description.

You don't practice the banjo you're born to it.

I'm in the fortunate position of being able to have someone skelp the banjo for me. 8)
