Duke St Prison

Postby Scottish bob » Wed Jun 01, 2011 6:14 am

Hi everyone Hello from Australia. :)
My name is Bob Davies and I am hoping some one can help me out, I was born in the Royal Glasgow Infirmary in 1943 and I am sure that we lived at 6 Burells Lane ( I think that is how it is spelt, ) and as a wee boy I remember playing in a yard that was right next to one of the walls that was part of the Duke St Womens prison, I remember at the bottom of Burells Lane if you turned left there was a pub, I also used to go to Rotton Row school,
My mums name was Flo Broon untill she married a Soldier from Liverpool called Robert Davies hence my name, can anyone give me any information regarding if any of Streets or buildings are still there we left Glasgow in 1952 as my dad was posted to Andover in England.
I hope some one can help me a little bit have a great day
Bob

Burrell Lane is still there and I think the pub may now be The lamp Post.

A guy called Strepadair took this shot on the seventies.

Check out http://www.mitchelllibrary.org/virtualmitchell/index.php?a=street&s=gallery&key=rYToxOntpOjA7czoxMToiQnVycmVsbHMgTGEiO30= for older photos.

and use Google maps Street view

but get there quick before demolition

The current proposals seek full planning permission for the erection of residential development in the buildings
(44 dwellings) with ground floor office (Class 4), common meeting space and associated landscaping. This will
necessitate the demolition of the Public House and the removal of many of the semi-mature trees on the site.

There is a happy land, doon in Duke Street Jile.
Where all the prisoners stand, hingin fae a nail,
Ham & eggs they never see, durty watter fur their tea,
There they live in mysery, doon in Duke Street Jile!

Possibly Matt McGinn? I mind my grandpaw showing me the bullet holes in the wall from when the IRA attacked a Black Mariah. Halcyon days indeed!

Aye if you poor mods would get out of Bread and Butter we could start at Babbity Bowster's, build the courage up at the College Bar and good god almighty enter the Lamp Post which is to the right in the photo.

We've done both of them, but usually in the course of or after walks. In fact we nearly did them on Monday, but ended up coming back from Parkhead Cross via Gallowgate and The Drovers instead.

People just don't turn out for 'out of city centre' nights.

Try putting their names in to the National Archives of Scotland search and see what comes up.
