They're ok, good for wrapping round branches or fences.

You may like to look at a beanbag as a compact tripod replacement, I use this one http://www.jessops.com/online.store/categories/Accessories/Tripods%20and%20Supports/Table%20Top%20Tripods/products/Jessops/The%20Pod%20Camera%20Support-3100/Show.html and it lives quite happily in my camera bag and frequently gets used when I don't have a tripod with me

I've got an old Benbo. It's as solid as a rock and has a solid ball and socket head. It extends to over seven feet. Anyone interested just PM me.
