The camera's instruction manual tells us that the lens mount is "Pentax/Praktika M-42 Mount". Unfortunately, the lens is beset with bloom and there's a Sunday afternoon job for me to take it apart and clean it.

I'm sure I'd used an instamatic as a young child, but it was the Chinon I remember as the camera I used to take my first serious photographs. They were of Mont Blanc in the summer of '79 when I was 11 years old.

It went on the airshow circuit with me in my teens:

Mum bought the kit brand new and I still have all the manuals; the lens has its original box. There's sentimental value to it, so I'll probably keep it a while and see if I can get some more action out of it.

Sorry about the rather long post; I thought I'd go through my OM kit.

Olympus OM-10 body, one of two that I own.

The other, with manual adaptor attached

I can't remember why I bought the second, but I think it had something to do with wanting negative film in one and slides in the other.

Zuiko (Olympus) standard 50mm lens, usually supplied with the OM-10 body.

Another. Note the bare metal on the filter mount screw-thread.

It had been mounted on one of the OM-10 bodies, in turn on a tripod with a jacket thrown over it to stop it heating in the sun. It was a calm day, but a freak gust blew the whole lot over, denting the filter mount. I thought that would be the end of it, but some years later, an engineer moved in next door to dad. He turned out to be a camera collector. He took one look at it and said "no problem, we'll have that in the workshop and fixed in half an hour." I watched, amazed, as the guy carried out some very fine and delicate "panel-beating". Carefully, he fettled the thread and inside an hour had most of the filters fitting.

2x convertor, OM-fit

Cumbersome 75-200 lens with power zoom. Very 'eavy, very 'umble. Can't find any reference to it.

Sigma 28-70mm OM-fit

Optomax 35mm OM-fit

Image

Miranda 24mm OM-fit

Careworn Olympus T-32 flash unit

I had the whole of this lot in a gadget bag (the one I still use) with an assortment of filters and accessories plus tripod (again, the one I still use) and carried the lot 200 miles across the Himalaya back in '95. I had a rucksack on my back, probably about 25-30kg and the gadget bag weighed in at 6kg which I had to hold in my hand. It's a wonder my knuckles don't drag the ground.

Imagine walking up Ben Nevis and down every day for three weeks like this in air at 2/3 pressure. I was fit as a fiddle when I got home.

To date, the last photo I took with my OM kit, October 2003, Thomas Telford's Menai Bridge, carrying his A5 London-Holyhead route from the mainland to Anglesey.

What a fabulous little wander through the years - and that Nepal shot is a cracker.

Thank you. I hope to have some similar Scottish shots to go with it before the bony fella taps on my door.

First, though, I'll need some batteries for the OMs.

What a palaver. I've just spent the last half-hour trying to find out how to change the owner's name on my EOS 300D.

Got there in the end, reinstalling all manner of crap on my system and then trying to find which piece of software is responsible.

Of course, I ignored the golden rule.

RTFM.

For those who don't know, RTFM. :)

Those Olympus fit lenses should fit current Oly DSLRs as far as I know. Albeit with manual aperture control.
(And agreed, that Nepal shot is a beaut.)

They won't - the current crop of Oly DSLRs use four thirds lenses which is a non-proprietry digital format, although the only other manufacturer to take it up is Panasonic.

The M42 lenses can be used on some DSLRs with the help of a cheap adapter from eBay sellers in Hong Kong. I know they'll definitley work on Sony and Pentax DSLRs with a glassless adapter but either Nikon or Canon (I think its Nikon) has too large a register distance and would require a glass element in the adapter to allow infinity focus, which then alters the focal length and degrades the image quality. You can pick up some fantastic M42 mount lenses for virtually no money including some fab Carl Zeiss lenses

I stand corrected :) It's a shame more makes haven't allowed older lenses to be used - by all accounts there's a lot of very nice glass out there, and it's awful to think it could be made redundant.

Sony DSC-S730 Cybershot £60 plus 2GB memory stick £20

I shall blood it later this morning.

Here's my trusty card reader. I've been using it for five years.

Image

Memory sticks go in the top right slot:

Image

So I took the memory stick out of the new toy and inserted it like so...

Image

...and the bastard tried to melt it:

Image

Fortunately the memory stick still works or I'd have to fork out £20 for another one.

If the card reader were any bigger, we could sort Doorstop's cheese on toast.

£7.99.
£13.69 if you're feeling saucy and fancy upgrading to 4GB.
