I use a Tamron 70/300 lense on my Nikon and you can switch it from Zoom to Macro, I've never had any problems with it.

Virtually every photo I've ever posted on here (and most I post anywhere else too!) has been taken with it, and I find it to be perfectly acceptable for most applications. I believe the bridge cameras similar to this have even more manual control, which would help sometimes in certain circumstances I reckon.
