Fujifilm S1000fd -
Looks to have great features and is smack bang in my price range. I love the Fuji compact iuse now so I am very tempted to get this. I'm really looking to up the quality of my pics a bit.
Any opinions - can't afford the Canon so don't wind me up !
Cheers guys & gals.

I have a Canon EF lens 75-300mm (not the ultrasonic one) which I use with my EOS 300D.

It's getting long in the tooth. The end ring that contains the screw thread for the filter is broken (it's made of plastic) and the zoom function has become stiff with age. The focus motor is rather weary too and I find I have to focus it manually.

Jessops have the ultrasound model for £210, but it still has the vulnerable filter mounting and I won't be surprised if it suffers from the same chromatic aberration as the one I have already.

I can probably get another six months use out of it before I need to replace it, but what to get?

What's a good alternative?

I have the Sigma 70-300 cheapo version http://www.warehouseexpress.com/product ... ku=1008573 but it does a good job for me. So if you have a bit more to spend maybe go for the better version.

Failing that sell the house and get a good bit of overpriced L glass.

P.S. Don't bin the old lens, we could swap or something.

Thanks for the advice.

The council won't thank me for it.

I expect it to be cannibalised at some point. They're not difficult to fix if you've got small fingers and patience.

The APO version of that Sigma is well worth the extra few quid and is easily the best of the entry-level 70-300mm range zooms.

I'm interested in one of these too if I can save up enough money. I have the S9600, which is I suppose the next model down and it's pretty good "almost SLR" quality.

Don't know much about photography but saw an edition of Good Housekeeping magazine (July 2008).
They tested nine digital cameras and gave verdicts on the three best which were as follows.
All three cameras fit into a pocket.
Best for the beach was OLYMPUS Mju 850SW at £229.99
Best budget buy was FUJIFILM Finepix Z100fd at £129
Best one was SONY Cyber-shot DSC-T2 at £249.99

For further details of the tests try the website
http://www.allaboutyou/goodhousekeeping

All have 8 megapixels and at least 3x optical zoom.
Sony one has enough memory not to need supplementary card.

Sorry think magazine had printed web address twice on the page but first one was incorrect.

For further details on tests on cameras try this link as below.
The magazine does tests on all kinds of household products so may be useful to a variety of people.

So I am pondering a camera....

...a Canon EOS 450D with a 24-70mm F2.8 L USM Zoom Lens - now I am assured this is pretty decent kit, but does anyone have experience of it or would recommend something to the contrary????

I could be doing with a new lens myself. Looks like I'll have to make do with the new tripod though which is many times less exciting.

How much is it going for? Most of the photos I've posted (everything bar the last couple of weeks) were taken with a 400D (one model below the 450), and the 24–70L is a really nice lens.
