Graham - damn right - you've got a eye for something right, be it colour, symmetry or *legal reasons* ;)

Kenny, just damn good pics, always!

It can often be a bit intimidating to ask questions of very experienced or proffesional photographers, some can be snooty and elitist (that's not anyone here, i'm talking about other photography forums), but HG has always been very welcoming of all types of photographs, & skill levels.

Even a fudd like me with his cheapie camera isn't ashamed to post their efforts :)
I'm only now attemping to fiddle around with stuff like white balance, and other settings (although there's not much on a point & shoot), to see if I can learn a bit more about it.

I think a well composed shot is more important than a technically "correct" one. I met a guy last week who was out and about taking pics and he told me he had been "into" photography for years and gave me a link to his pics online - they were bloody awful! Technically they were okay but they looked for all the world like someone's holiday snaps.

To be fair though my own photos were like that too until I started visiting HG and took inspiration from the stuff here - Fossil and Alan being the main two that I have stolen ideas from

Can you PM me the link Graham ? ::):

How much "tweaking" of photos do you guys do ? Do you prefer them more or less straight from the camera, or do you run your images through a lot of filters, and colour correction, etc ?

And what free editing programmes would you recommend ? I've altready got Infanview, & Imageforge.
Simple programmes would be good :-)

With me it really depends on what I'm trying to achieve -

a simple record shot would just just colour correction and levels adjusted, and maybe a crop for

If I was trying to be a bit more artistic it can vary from very little post processing (like above) or I could photoshop an image to within an inch of its life.

As for processing software - I use Capture One LE for RAW workflow - normally €99 but free with SanDisk Extreme III cards.

Corel Paint Shop Pro is bundled with Lexar Pro cards and is almost as capable as Photoshop.

The Gimp is supposedly quite good and is free although I haven't used it.

I took my Kodak "Easy Share" digital camera into Dick Smith's the other day to get new batteries but I happened to mention that it seemed to be going through the batteries at a rate of knots. When he tested them, he said they were still fully charged, so my camera is stuffed.

Or is it? Is there anything I can try before I go and buy a new one? (Which will be a long time from now as money is tight!)
