Site At Former Bus Depot At 1875 Great Western Road G13
Demolition of listed structure in relation to proposed residential development

Anyone know which listed structure they're talking about? I thought they had converted the offices and canteen in to flats.

Listing report for the site appears to indicate that the huge garage structure at the back is also included in the listing - is it still there?

I'm off this week. If they say ok, can I come along, please? I won't bring that HH, honest.

Will do my best. I am off on holiday soon but if I get in you will be the first to know. Is HH allowed into the west end.
Thank you. And why not.

I would have expected the office block to be listed but I'm a bit surprised that the garage is too. As far as I am aware Knightswood was modelled on the Berlin municipal bus garage which at the time was the largest in Europe.
I have quite a lot of memories of the place as I worked as a crew driver out of there between 1972 and 1973.

Whiteinch Demolition have now started at the back of the garage to knock it down. Redrow will NOT give permission for any none regulated staff to enter site and the guy from WD wil not accept bribes. No way was I phoning Ruchill Security for any assistance to get in or I would have ended up being somebodys bitch.
Thank you. And why not.

The original shed of Knightswood Garage being demolished.
I didn't feel as sad as I thought I would, in some ways there's more dignity in demolition than seeing it turned into something else like they did with the admin block.

My little souvenir. I could have grabbed a full brick (or ten) but I didn't have anyway to carry it, so I settled for this.

Happier days.

It's sad to see the old place go but a big thanks to GK for those older photos.

The number 20 bus brings back lots of memories as that was my mode of transport when living in 'theDrum' and the number2 behind further enhances memories as my Uncle John Brown used to work that route out of Knightswood. My memory suggests Uncle John was a driver while my older brother thinks he was a conductor.

I don't really care which but one of my dreams was to become a Corpy Bus Driver and that dream was ignited by Uncle John taking me up to where the Knightswood number 2 bus terminated, the street above where he lived in Towerhill Road, to give me a guided tour of it !

It was the same breed as the one behind the number 20 in the photo and, even today, I can still remember the warm diesel fumes filling up my nostrils.

A little question for Ken, though. Can you tell me the breeding of the four buses clearly visible in your photo ?

Thanks again for the memories, Ken, and please post more piccies from that era if you have tem.

They're AEC Regents MkIII and an almost new Mk5. At that time (mid 1950's) Knightswood was a mainly AEC garage.
I would have liked to have a look around and see if I could grab a few signs and the like before they're bulldozed into mush :( Hopefully Larkfield will be different.

Some photos of Regents in the 1950s early 60s.

This one's at Larkfield.

Late 1930s. This is the second shed at Knightswood which was demolished a few years ago.

Scrap lye at Knightswood 1950s, a mixture of AEC, Albion, & Damiler.
