Conference on Glasgow tenement rehab (1-2 May)

Postby Ronnie » Fri Apr 24, 2009 11:29 pm

The annual conference of the Architectural Heritage Society of Scotland includes a session on the "innovative programme of community-led rehabilitation of C19 working-class tenements in Glasgow" in the 1970s and 1980s. The conference is in Edinburgh on Friday 1 and Saturday 2 May, and the Glasgow bit is on the Saturday. More details here: http://www.eca.ac.uk/index.php?id=1147 Maybe see some of you there? :D

Tosh.
The only reason that the tenements survived was that the Corporation ran out of money to demolish them.
Irony, they picked up an award for not demolishing them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I thought it was because the Corporation did the sums and worked out that a comprehensive improvement programme was no more expensive than demolition and rebuild and, in conjunction with a well-planned temporary decant programme, managed to save communities.

Yes, my brother-in-law was a demolisher & confirmed this to me many years ago (unofficially of course).
Same way that shop owners were treated. We had 2 shops in Maryhill Road & 1 in Gairbraid Avenue near the Police Station.
Once again (unofficial) policy. If you had a shop in a tenement building then all the residents were decanted & the building left empty for the vandals & thieves to enter & strip the valuables out leaving an empty shell which became dangerous & the remaining shop owners had to either leave the tenement & receive no compensation or stay where they were & face break ins & no insurance cover.
We were lucky as I found out that if I approached the corporation & offered to sell to them before the Compulsory Purchase Order was served then we would recieve greater compensation than we would have if we had just sat & waited. This took 3 years from start to cheque arriving!!!!!!!!!!.

I think we're missing the point of national policy and legislation. Glasgow was no different from other councils, even if some officials had rather ... interesting ... ways of going about their business.

Evidence please.
"I before E, except after C" works in most cases but there are exceptions.
