And that's a very important point you make about replication of the traditional built form - if we could afford to do it we would.

Building in stone was is a skill that was thousands of years in the making: we've been building in steel and concrete for more or less a century.

Make what you will of that :)

You're 100% correct that the development was never intended to be 'affordable' but affordability is just what that area needs.

Finnieston/ Sandyford/ Overnewton is still a community and, while RSL's are struggling to source land to further their work, developers and buy to rent profiteers are making things ever more difficult for people who simply want to live and bring up kids close to where they were born and where their extended families live.

The only off-licence on that stretch is GG Brothers and they are unequivocally shit. Anything that breaks their monopoly can only be a good thing. Whilst I might take issue with the point that it is "none too shabby" it certainly does offer a bit more than your typical concrete/glass monstrosity. It is, in fact, clad in some rather beautiful sandstone which will hopefully still look good in ten years time, unlike the brick development at the confluence of Sauchiehall and Argyle Streets or the render of the Galleria opposite Kelvingrove Museum.

It is, however, two stories too high for the neighbourhood, over dominates the local street scape and ruins the view from the end of Berekely Street (which used to be suitably finished with the visage of the Creme de la Creme). It's not the worst development going up in Glasgow at the moment and if its retail space means that there are better wines available in the Sandyford area than Ernst and Julio Gallo then just this once, I will go with the flow...

Due to planning constraints (and probably nothing else, alas) that is exactly what happened with recent developments in both Great George and Gardner Streets. Pretty sure they both sold out quickly.

I, like many, would much rather the site had been available for affordable housing (like the nearby Corunna Street, Brechin Street and Dover Street developments) but that simply wasn't the case.

I don't imagine any of the sites I've mentioned will win any architectural awards but isn't the point of affordable housing that it needs to be affordable?

Can someone tell me what is deemed to be "affordable" for a house these days? I'm still living in the dark ages here. 8)
Ehhh... cool. Whatever you say, I'm sorry. You're the man. The dude in the chair.

Just wondered if anyone knew anything about the derelict brick building which can be seen behind the Hothouse development at the Finnieston end of Argyle Street (backing onto Minerva St)? Would love to know the history and current status?

Well done Egg man.
"I before E, except after C" works in most cases but there are exceptions.
