tickets?

theyre no going to charge the locals to watch them getting blown down are they?

considering you can see them from most of the city that might be a bit hard to administer :)

Music to blow the Red Road flats up to - the 1812 overture. A right daft idea. What message does it give to impoverished African commonwealth etc countries. Scotland must be very wealthy blowing up houses when we cant get any. Then there is the twin towers" factor".

Having thought about this, I think the whole idea is down right daft.
Do we really want to celebrate years of Glasgow's failed housing policies by calling attention to them and blowing them up in front of the world?

That doesn't seem to bother Americans that much it seems, given the glee they still implode Las Vegas casino-hotels with - hell they even make a whole series on Discovery Channel about explosive demolitions of tall structures. They actually visited Sighthill 6 years ago, when they were knocking down the block right next to the railway lines out of Queen Street. Remember the GHA turned that one into something of a night time spectacle as well.

Interesting quote from Miles Glendinning's excellent book "Tower Block" (copy is in the Mitchell if anyone's interested), when the Hutchie C blowdown went pear shaped back in 1994: "it dealt a fatal blow to that most conspicuous ritual of Anti-Modernism–the demolition of tower blocks as public theatre". Well....it did...for a mere decade.

"The Detonators" covers the Sighthill demolition and also Shawbridge. It is repeated on channel 38 Quest from time to time.

Plans to demolish the 5 towers of the Red Row Flats during the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games have been shelved on erm "safety grounds" according to BBC & STV news websites.

Nothing to to with the strong public opposition to the proposal at all.....aye right.

Maybe Councillor Matheson will learn from this but given that he presided over 2 PR disasters already 1) George Square 2) Conegate, and now 3) Red Road Sporting dynamite I won't be holding my breath.

Councillor Mathieson yet again gives way to public opinion. George Square then "conegate" now a his big bang is to be another day. But it will some nameless "official" on the little matter of health and safety that stopped the demolition.

I'm hearing that a number of residents in the surrounding houses were ready to refuse to be evacuated from their properties to accommodate the blow down - I'm sure the negative publicity that would have ensued played a part in ditching the ceremonial demolition.

H&S is used all too often as an excuse either to do or not to do something, and I suspect that this is the case in this U Turn, I notice that GHA & Councillor Matheson who championed the Big Bang, are not taking responsibility for the U Turn down have chosen to hide behind the Glasgow 2014 committee and Police Scotland.

It's not just that they will not admit that they got it wrong, they will not even give the large lawful protest any credence in changing their decision. They are now actually blaming the protesters. Apparently the demolition cannot go ahead because of fears that the protesters could pose a threat to security & safety at the site.
Yes Bridie, you do.

I see Reporting Scotland are interviewing Steven Purcell. This story gets more sordid by the hour.
