Posted on February 11, 2013 by admin

Glasgow Housing Association ( GHA ) has appointed Dem-Master Demolition Limited as the principal contractor for the demolition and site clearance of the three 20 storey tower blocks at Iona Court Glasgow. Minor preparatory works have commenced however these are currently limited to site boundary fencing. Site cabins and welfare facilities will be arriving during week commencing 28th January with roads, pavements and services infrastructure condition surveys also being carried out during this week.

Initially we will be limiting our works on site to internal strip out works with machine demolition not commence until late April or Early May 2013. We will demolish the blocks by means of High Reach demolition excavators and the works will be completed by the end of this year. During the works on site we will keep dust and noise levels to a minimum at all times. All demolition materials will be transported back to our Bathgate recycling centre for processing. Dem-Master are currently recycling 95% of all demolition materials excluding asbestos.

Dem-Master Demolition Limited are one of the largest demolition contractors operating in Scotland and throughout the UK with our head office located in Bathgate, West Lothian. We have been involved in numerous projects involving the demolition of domestic and commercial properties since 1994 in the public and private sector and similarly for clients within the industrial, commercial, housing, health sectors etc.

As part of our continued commitment to local communities, we intend to have a Neighbourhood Care Centre on-site at Iona Court Glasgow where affected neighbours/residents will be able to come and chat through any questions or concerns they may have in relation to the demolition works being carried out.

Glasgow’s skyline is set to be transformed with the demolition of three high-rise flats in Govan.
Europe’s tallest mobile long reach excavator will bring down the multi-storey blocks at Iona Court in Govan as part of a Glasgow Housing Association regeneration project.
The three blocks – at 31, 45 and 59 Iona Court – were built in 1970. They are being demolished following a decline in demand for homes in the blocks and also high investment and running costs.
Many of the former residents were re-housed locally in one of GHA’s new-build developments at the neighbouring Summertown Road in Govan or other new-build or upgraded GHA homes across the city. Some residents have also moved to other partner social landlords’ new-build properties.
The demolitions are part of ongoing regeneration plans by GHA and its partner agencies to transform communities across the city.
GHA, which is part of the Wheatley Group, has invested more than £1.3 billion since 2003 in refurbishing, modernising and improving homes across the city.
David Fletcher, Wheatley Group director of regeneration, said: “The demolition of the multi-storey blocks at Iona Court marks another important step forward in the ongoing regeneration of the east Govan and Ibrox areas.
“Our new development at Summertown Road is already breathing new life into the wider area and our redevelopment of the tower block at 15 Ibroxholm Oval will also be available for let for mid-market rent from next month.
“We’d like to thank local residents and businesses for their co-operation during this latest demolition.”
The excavator, which is owned by contractor Dem-Master and stands at 70 metres tall (229ft), will begin work on the 20-storey GHA blocks over the next couple of weeks, with the demolitions expected to be completed by December. Around 90% of the rubble will be recycled.
The use of the ultra longreach excavator means local roads will remain open throughout the work, which will minimise disruption to the community.
