Govan Graving Docks Photographs

This project has been updated by a great collection of photogrpahs of the docks while they were still in use taken by Stephen Donnelly.

Well worth a look. Especially seeing that they have been totally flattened now!

It's incredible to think that there was so much there not long ago. I expect the same will happen to the disused Kvaerner buildings, they'll just be left until they are vandalised, unrepairable shells, then demolished and turned into £250,000 flats.

I shudder to think, but "luxury flats" (read small and expensive) and shiny blobby silver buildings seem to be what is destined to line the banks of the Clyde.

The plans to redevelop the graving docks have been unveiled. Not perhaps as bad as feared as it looks as though at least some of the basins willbe retained as features.

The homes will have to be built very quick if that photo is accurate as I believe the tall ship is to be moved downstream to the new transport museum.

Does anybody know why part of the canting basin was filled in a while ago, at the south end? Presumably the terrain created is also earmarked for development of some kind or whoever arranged this wouldn't have gone to so much trouble and expense.

Whenever I pass the place, or see pics like that, I always wonder where all the people and boats have gone.

I remember the place when it was busy, as I had to carry out survey work on some of the vessels that were docked there for service.

For anyone who missed it on the 'Gartloch' thread, here's the developers' website:

I think that qualifies as the worst company website I've seen in a long, long time! It's a bit of a worry that the development is in the hands of people who demonstrate as little attention to detail as this. I hope they're better at building than designing websites! (maybe you should get in there, Sharon?)

A picture is worth a thousand words, eh?

Anyone know what this would have been used for?
I can imagine a heavy (anchor?) chain nestling in the groove.

I had a good trawl through your Website last night, TCM, you have some wonderful pics there, I especially liked the shots of Italy in general & the Colosseum in particular.

I've been told they are timber slides. But some of them have a metal plate at the top that looks like its been worn out by a rope or chain. Perhaps the timber was slid down attached to a rope??? Maybe not...

Ponder ponder... I'm sure someone will know!
