BBC NEWS

The redevelopment of Queen Street Station is expected to be completed in 2015
Network Rail has selected the Buchanan Partnership as its partner for a multi-million pound redevelopment of Glasgow Queen Street station.

The project is expected to run from 2013 until 2015, with some improvements made for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

A new glass frontage will be added to the station's George Square entrance.

Inside, the concourse will be extended, a new mezzanine level food court added, along with an atrium link to the Buchanan Galleries shopping centre.

The Dundas Street and North Hanover Street entrances will also be redesigned and there will be a new entrance created from Cathedral Street.

'Exciting plans'
The mezzanine and food court will be created in the air space above the current station car park, while that car park will be replaced with a multi-storey parking facility.

David Simpson, Network Rail route managing director for Scotland, said: "Glasgow Queen Street is one of the busiest stations in Scotland handling more than 19 million passengers a year and the proposals announced today will deliver a more modern station with enhanced retail and leisure facilities for those travellers.

"The Buchanan Partnership's exciting plans for the station will also greatly enhance the appeal of the wider city centre to rail passengers and shoppers alike and this partnership allows Network Rail to redevelop this important station in a cost-effective way and generate additional revenue which we can reinvest in the nation's railways."

The Buchanan Partnership is a joint venture between Land Securities and Henderson Global Investors.

Land Securities head of retail, Lester Hampson, said: "The redevelopment of Glasgow Queen Street Station will create a world-class integrated transport hub and is an important element in progressing our aspiration to enhance and expand the Buchanan Quarter, cementing Glasgow's position as the top retail and leisure destination outside London."

As much as i loath a lot of modern glass structures.its better than the manky building there at moment.
Why are we not linking up low level to the subway station without having to come up to high level then go back down to subway.this would make life a lot easier for folks. But its a start .the area around station is run down looking.

Probably find that all of scotland may be electrified eventually with the possible exception of the west highlands (oban, ft william and mallaig) may not be viable due to lack of services

I was curious to why city union line was on list because its part of the crossrail route that was shelved.

Two (or more) problems I have with this, they could have been a bit more imaginative with the atrium – it just looks like a derivative office block you’d find down on the Broomielaw, in much the same way as what is there at the moment is a derivative office block of the 1970s. These glass boxes look fine when they are new, but after a few years they get grubby, and covered in algae, dust and bird s**t if they are not maintained and look dreadful.

Secondly – the doubting thomases on the Evening Times came along the following day saying it may not happen, and when you dig deeper, you see that NR is funding a lot of its new projects (including EGIP, incidentally) by borrowing against the future predicted value of its asset base. Erm….isn’t doing this exactly what has got the world into so much economic turmoil, albeit on a much grander scale.

A lot of it also seems to depend on the expansion of the Galleries, which seems to stutter along, one minute it is on, the next minute it is not. No mention or any detailed drawings on how the expanded Galleries will connect to an expanded Queen Street. I suspect it ties in with the plan to knock down the multi-storey car park, and build an expanded mall over this, which will join to Queen Street station’s “new” bit over the North Hanover Street car park.

And another thing, let’s hope they fix the Cathedral Street bridge whilst they are at it!!

Alternate Queen Street Station vision outlined
September 30 2011

Fresh from Network Rails publication of its preferred solution for the redevelopment of Queen Street Station, a glazed extension penned by architects BDP, Paul Stallan Studio RMJM have released details on the one that got away.

Stallan’s refresh studio sought to address two main areas in their proposal - to extrude the existing structural arch of the station out to George Square and create a new public space below it at the entrance to the station concourse.

This additional public space resulted in a net loss of retail space however - which may ultimately have weighed against the scheme.

As in BDP’s scheme Stallan’s approach would have incorporated a redesigned taxi drop off and circulation space to the east, incorporating a huge new multi storey car park to facilitate expansion plans at the Buchanan Galleries – the owners of which are carrying out the revamp.

Buchanan Galleries are seeking to expand their mall with £83m of public money being stumped up by Glasgow City Council for the public works component under a Tax Increment Finance scheme.

This is being challenged by the rival St Enoch Centre, which funded its own recent £100m refurbishment, as uncompetitive.

Copious public realm comes at the cost of rental income

Queen Street Station's roof, its stand out feature, would be dug out from behind a mess of 60's concrete

The rundown streetscape surrounding the station would be upgraded as part of the plan

The Cathedral Street bridge is the one which goes past the rear of the station and over the railway tracks. The one that has had the weight restriction on it for the last 9 years due to the poor state of the structure.

Maybe they have been saving up all the £30 fines collected from cars being caught using the bus lane to help pay for the repairs.....
