Trees on the Kelvin Way

Postby The Egg Man » Thu Mar 17, 2011 1:13 am

Has anyone noticed the discolouration on the trees which line the Kelvin Way?

I confess I hadn't until it was pointed out to me by a taxi driver.

Anyone know what it is and if it's serious? It'd change the whole complexion of the area if the trees had to come down.

Trees can get a thing called "winter injury" Its caused by extreme weather, and with the winter we just had and snow still coming.

Might be that.

or salt damage.

Salts used for deicing pavements can cause damage to trees and shrubs. Symptoms of salt damage appear in spring and early summer and include browning of evergreens, leaf scorch, branch die back, and dead areas in turf. Branches and twigs can be killed from aerial deposits, and roots can be damaged from salt remaining in the soil. Salt will leach through well-drained soils, but damage can be extensive in poorly drained soils
Is this gonna be a standup fight, sir, or another bughunt?

Thank you.

That article goes back to 17 Aug 2010. It's a bit surprising there hasn't been more fuss made about it. The Kelvin Way is going to look very different for a while :(

I had noticed that the trees were patchy, but didn't put it down to discolouration or disease. I thought that the bark had been damaged and come off, either because of the cold weather or because of squirrels.
