Yes good news indeed dexter... as I posted a wee while back elswhere:"I think it should be said that by all accounts Derek Souter of Dunlop Street Properties has long persevered with the Egyptian Halls and he does seem to be doing so with a sympathetic and appropriate development in mind."

Fingers crossed

I'd hate to live in most parts of the City Centre, my cousin does and doesn't like it despite the 'handyness' of things.

Never mind trams- stick up wires and run trolleybuses. Also if First stopped running every bus down there it would help. Bit noisey- triple glazing please!

Egyptian Halls

Walk like an Egyptian on Union St

The Morrison Partnership have unveiled long awaited plans to restore Alexander “Greek” Thomson’s Egyptian Halls for
Union Street Properties. The £6.5 million development should commence June 2009 for completion by December 2010.

Restoration of the famous A listed cast iron framed warehouse will reinvigorate a down at heel Union St by returning to prominence its most famous architectural landmark.

Indicative proposals call for reinstatement of original motifs at ground level alongside standardised signage across the presently cluttered streetscape. A recessed split level rooftop extension will expand available floor space to 75,000 sq/ft, in a similar fashion to g1.

Quite a radical intervention for such an important structure. I like it, though the rooftop extension looks a replica of the GPO. Not necessarily a bad thing I suppose.

I like the sound of the standardised signage.

They had a form of specialist architectural restorers in a couple of days ago, not to begin restoration per se but to see whether it was actually possible to retain the full building. The bloke I spoke to said worst case scenario was facade retention, but they were hopeful.

I saw the scaffolding from a bus on Tuesday. It looked as if it had been erected such that it was impossible to get a wheelchair through some of the gaps.
