The Holocaust and Film
Films with a Holocaust theme will be screened at the Glasgow Film Theatre in the lead up to national Holocaust Memorial Day which the city will host on Tuesday 26 January.
Pupils from 40 primary and secondary schools across the city will attend screenings of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and Am Ende Kommen Touristen between January 18 and Monday 25.
The films are being shown as part of ‘Determined to Make Movies’ within the schools’ curriculum. This year’s theme for Holocaust Memorial Day is ‘Legacy of Hope.’
Lord Provost Bob Winter said: “It is vital that the stories of Holocaust survivors are heard and remembered. The films are thought provoking and I know that everyone who attends cannot fail to be moved by what they will see and hear.
“This year is the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp. With each passing year, fewer and fewer of the survivors of the Holocaust are left to tell their stories to new generations. It is therefore important that the lessons of the Holocaust are remembered by young people today.”
Other events leading up to national Holocaust Memorial Day include testimony from Holocaust survivors performed by school children and members of the Citizens Theatre Young Company as well as workshops helping school children explore the lives and experiences of high profile Scots Holocaust survivors: the late Rev Ernest Levy, Jane Haining and Marianne Grant, being held at St Mungo’s Museum of Religious Life and Art.
