Trip to Cathcart Cemetery Sunday 7 MAY

Postby Ronnie » Sun Apr 23, 2006 11:08 pm

Anyone up for a tour of Cathcart Cemetery on Sunday 7 May?

We can move this to What's On once a few folk say yes. 8)

I'll have the maps and some info on the folk buried there - including Stan Laurel's mum, R. S. McColl, and the Hood family, who used to live in The Knowe (an Alexander Thomson design) but who now inhabit a small Egyptian temple.

Not sure about nearby cheap eats/ warehouse shopping ... :)

Seriously now, if any of you knuts out there, seek, in any way, to inhale a modicum of Glasgow's history, do yourself a favour & hook up with one of Ronnie's trips, it will cost you fuck all & you'll learn more than you ever thought posible. Folks is folks, and the nice thing is that the Doc is a learner too. Sign up, whatcha gotta lose :?:

I would like to, but 7th June seems to be a Wednesday and I am away.

If you mean 7th May, unfortunately I am also away :(

Ronnie
Would your tour also include the Jewish section?
I've been round Cathcart Cemetery a few times but have never been able to access the Jewish section

Margaret, there's a hole in the wall you can cut through, just walk from the gate nearest holmwood house along the perimeter and ul find the gap; the gap in the wall of the jewish section (I think, if i remember correctly) is directly adjacent :)

Sounds good Ronnie, I'll probably come along too.

Crusty_Bint
Thanks. I want to get photographs of some graves there for a friend in Canada - Ronnie's tours sound good though, If i'm not working I will try to get to this one.

I've marked the gap in red. It takes you into the Christian bit. The Jews are at the far north eastern end, past the Muslims.

The graves that I am looking for are in the Jewish section across the road from the main graveyard.....
So will the hole in the wall only get me into the main graveyard.
I'm too big to squeeze through the gates
Not fit enough to scale the wall
:o

The hole in the wall gets you into the new graveyard and the jewish bit is at the far end so no climbing or squeezing required.
