12 October: Anatomy Museum

Postby Ronnie » Mon Sep 06, 2004 3:21 pm

The Hunterian Museum at Glasgow University is offering a short tour of its Anatomy Museum, which is usually strictly off-limits to the public, on Tuesday 12 October. Meet in the Hunterian Museum (in the GU main building) at 12.45. Free, no need for tickets, just turn up. Not for the squeamish! 8O

The full list of the Tuesday lunchtime talks (inclding one on the Tennent's Lager Lovelies!) at the Hunterian is here:

Nice one. I've been in a couple of times over the years and it it truely a wonderous sight to behold.

It verges into the realms of fetish at times. As well as being deeply deeply unsettling and often downright disturbing.

The boys head in a jar is still a vivid image!!!

I will definately be going to this!!

Hi Sharon
The one that always sticks in my mind (which has its own talk in November) is the section of the baby in the womb.
By the way, Dr Stuart McDonald, who is leading the tour, is a fellow Doonhamer, frae Dunscore.

The baby in the womb was highly disturbing to see.

If these don't get you interested in going there is a wonderful collection of HUGE penises. ::):

Ah the Anatomy Museum, and the infamous huge willie in a jar. Long thought to be a Uni legend until I was fortunate enough to get a wander around one day. My he was a big lad, made me come over all shy. Mind you at least mine is still attached and not in a jar...

Top exhibits for me were the cross sections od the human body. i had not realised how big the Aorta in as it leaves the heart!

The time I went we just wandered in, there's nobody there to check that you are a medical student.

The Cyclopian babies in jars are particularly disturbing, brings a new meaning to the term "dickhead".

Out of interest, is the museum still in the old building or did they move it to the new one opposite the Boyd Orr?

Apparently Marilyn Manson got a private tour when he played Gig on the Green a couple of years ago.

Neither. It's in the Thomson Building.

When i was in sixth year at school, i and another classmate went on a student shadowing day at Glasgow uni, to see what it was like. The two students that showed me around were supposed to take me to lectures, the library etc but they ended up just taking us to the anatomy museum, then the union. And they got paid for it!
I see dead buildings...
