press release

The Trades House of Glasgow

The Trades House of Glasgow is delighted to present this unique opportunity to enjoy an evening in the company of Enoch Dalmellington, the Tobacco Merchant's Lawyer.

‘The Tobacco Merchant's Lawyer is essential autumn fare.’ Melissa Poll, British Theatre Guide

The Trades Hall is the historic home of Glasgow’s 14 incorporated Crafts and their Council the Trades House which dates back to 1605. Originally established to regulate trade in the City, The Trades House and the Fourteen Crafts played a vital role in shaping and making Glasgow.
The Trades Hall in Glassford Street is the oldest building in Glasgow to remain in its original use other than Glasgow Cathedral and it is the only major work by Adam surviving in the city.
Still based in the Trades Hall, the House and Crafts work to maintain traditional craft skills, in parallel with new technologies. They have more than 7000 members drawn from a wide range of backgrounds.
The House and Crafts focus on maintaining the traditional skills that have served Glasgow so well through continuing and developing the proud traditions of the past.
Today an organisation with charitable purposes the Trades House of Glasgow and its Craft Guilds distribute around £500,000 annually for educational and other charitable uses.

In a new move and to develop the public awareness of its building and work, The Trades Hall is presenting this unique performance of Iain Heggie’s classic play The Tobacco Merchant’s Lawyer.
The play is set in the late 1700s at the time when the Trades Hall was built by Robert Adam. In the Merchant City, Glasgow is booming but the American war is looming. The city’s wealth is dependent on American tobacco. Will the great port survive? This pressing question is NOT addressed by Enoch Dalmellington, resident of Virginia St. He is more concerned about marrying off his dreich pious humourless daughter Euphemia, being able to afford his pew at the Tron Kirk and what to do about Mistress Zapata’s scurrilous predictions about Glasgow in 2010.
‘Women will be attending university, the poor will all have water closets and tobacco smoking will be banned in public places...’

Enjoy a supper in the Saloon before moving into the Grand Hall for the performance itself.
Tickets are £20.00 including supper which will start at 5.30pm. Tickets for the performance only at 7.30pm are £10.00. Available from http://www.thebooth.co.uk or from the Trades Hall Office on 0141 552 2418 9Option 1)

While I should declare an interest and say that the director is a friend, this is a really good play. Well worth seeing, especially in this setting.

Made it along to see this tonight and it was brilliant! I couldn't help but think that it would go down really well with a lot of folks around here. Was only on for one night this time around but if any of you get the chance to see it again somewhere down the line (it's been played a few times over the last couple of years in various places) then I'd heartily recommend it.
