One for the lads - well, sort of...

Postby BrigitDoon » Tue Feb 16, 2010 5:11 pm

OK, lads, as reported elsewhere, I'm intending to go to the Old Combustians reunion.

I don't want to put anyone's nose out of joint and I've seen the disturbed look on lads' faces when they find out. This could be like throwing a grenade in the room if I get it wrong.

If you went to school with Bob and Bob is now Jill, how would you prefer to find out?

i) In advance.
ii) On the night.
iii) Afterwards.
iv) Wonder who Jill was and how come she knows so much...
v) Some other specific circumstances (no, not the broom-cupboard!)

BD,

I hope you don't mind me answering this question and I can't answer for the males on this forum so here's hoping you get some repiles from them too.

If I were in your situation I would prefer if people knew before the event as I think it is better that way.
I am only going on my own experiences as I have attended two reunions in the last few years.
The first one was held at an hotel and the other at the school itself.
I met a few people at the reunion who didn't know my mother had died and I think they felt a little awkward.
I know that I did and I tried to change the subject so they wouldn't feel bad.
Also one girl I knew had been treated quite badly by her husband who had been having a fling over a few years and then a child to the woman. I was glad I knew this information in advance so I did not mention husband, divorce etc.

I know you are in a different situation altogether and I wish you well whatever you decide.
Hope you have a good reunion.

Hi Brigit, I think I would like to know in advance. As Dot says, it would avoid any awkward moments with people feeling flustered and not knowing what to say. Anyone who had a problem with it would avoid you, but you're not going to want to spend any time in their company anyway. Those that didn't would be spared any awkward moments.
I don't know how you would let people know in advance though - it's not like you can send out a press release :)

I would like to know in advance, but that would purely be for my benefit to feel less awkward in case I said the wrong thing. Sorry if this isn't any help,
Scott

Close call, I got a friends reunited message from a girl I kissed in 1972 who's now a baldy bloke. So yeah, I would have liked to know. But who knows>? I t was a remote re introduction that made sense in terms of catching up on anything that may have happened in the last 38 years

Thanks all, your opinions are really useful. Sorry, Dot, I do welcome your thoughts. I aimed the question at the lads in particular because all the people I knew at the school were lads and it's generally lads who are put out by what I've done. The thought of surgery makes them squirm...

I can get word to those attending because it's RSVP by 2nd April and the event isn't until 8th May, so the school will have chance to write to any old friends who are attending.

I wonder how many of them will turn out to be girls too. :D

You better let them know in advance.

Try and let them know in advance B. The cunts can keep out of your road, and the gents will know not to put their feet in anything. Have a good night.

I would have to agree with the majority of postings here Bridge .. you7 shouldn't really have to, in an ideal world it wouldn't matter a jot, but it's not an ideal world is it and there's bound to be some fucking u-bend who takes offence at not being forewarned.

Fill them in then turn up and knock them out at how balanced and settled you are ... then lock the doors and blow the gaffe to smithereens ..

Have a good time should you attend. :D

That's exactly what I was trying to say, I just couldn't find the right words.

I would basically like to second most of the opinions on here and say go for it. If people have a problem with you being yourself then they are probablly not worth the effort anyway.

On a lighter note you never know what could happen

That's an excellent quote, Catriona; thank you :)
