My university once managed to spell its own name wrongly on the matric cards. ::): Still, I suppose getting the country's name wrong is a bit more serious. However, I'm sure it has made a lot of Chilean coin collectors very happy.

On the other hand, we have some pretty dodgy stuff on our coins, don't we? The stuff about Elizabeth II D.G. is debatable.

It's not a spelling mistake but ....

In the late 60s there was a competition run in the Evening Times.

It ran:

Which diminutive red-haired Glasgow songstress hit the top of the charts with a song called 'Shout'?

Heh, very daft "Evening Times". ::): It used to be really great for typos and mistakes.

A day or two ago, the "Herald" online had a headline about a plan to build a new hangar at Pertwick. They did eventually fix it.

That's a harder contest than the ones they did on Richard and Judy.
"I before E, except after C" works in most cases but there are exceptions.

When Madonna married Guy Ritchie at Skibo Castle the Record enlisted a load of freelancers to cover all aspects of the event.

One was tasked with finding out what happened during the ceremony - all press barred oot of course.

He filed his copy - all wind and piss as you'd expect - and wrote that "the music during the ceremony was a selection composed by Pecan and Bah".

They went to press with this just as a correction was emailed to them by the freelance, explaining that he had put his copy through a spellchecker, and the composers should actually have read Puccini and Bach.

The sub who dealt with the copy - a pal of mine - was grilled by a couple of red-eyed, hyperventilating news execs who screamed at him as to why the fecking feck he had fecking let that fecking through.

He said: "I thought Pecan and Bah were probably some hip hop outfit she was pally with."

For my sins, I work for the health service. There is no requirement now for admin staff to actually know how to spell or type. The state of some of the letters produced has to be seen to be believed. Frightening.

That's great LP! There's a similar one in Drury Street, where there is a no-smoking premise.

Me too, sort of. But as the saying goes, if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys.

They did not turn up on time; for the first six months a manager had to check all their emails for spelling and grammar...

The DWP has made it clear: work is where the inflated claims for our state education finally hit the buffers. At every stage we have a system in which the expediency of politicians and the ideology of the educational establishment take precedence over the interests of pupils.

We have children who can barely read and write scoring high marks in their Sats because it makes the school, and therefore politicians, look good. We have exam boards competing to offer the lowest pass mark because it allows heads to fulfil their GCSE targets. We have pupils pushed into easy subjects at A-level — which excludes them from applying to a top university — because it benefits the school. And we have universities that offer a 2:1 degree, as the IT company director put it, to “anyone who bothers to sit down and take the exam”.
