Perhaps I am in a minority but have never really known what the song was about.
I read somewhere that a 'dutchie' is some sort of an oven or a cooking pot in Jamaica.
I wondered if song was about people on drugs?

Dutchie is not the original word in the lyrics (originally by the Mighty Diamonds). It replaced koutchie which is a marijuana pipe. The song really implies to pass the marijuana to the left while sitting in a circle to make sure everyone gets their turn.

I'm content to 'let the fuckers work that one out' for themselves.

Anyone explain why the New Statesman article has a picture of a sofa waiting to be collected by the council and calling it "poverty in Scotland?"

I does seem rather odd. I don't suppose Jon Cruddas chose the pic or wrote the 'Poverty in Scotland: How can Labour help the whole country?' line.

It's not odd at all.

'Glasgow tenements' are lazy shorthand for poverty. If you can throw in a Farmfoods carrier bag, some abandoned furniture and a mother with a child in a pushchair rather than a 4x4, so much the better.

You can get a very long way down that speech indeed before you come across something that couldn't just as easily have been said by David Cameron, btw.

I'm more annoyed at the resizing job that's been done on the photo of the couch outside the tenement. Noticeable aliasing, moire on the blinds too. Amateurs! ::):

As Josef pointed out would a photograph "prosperity in Glasgow" have a waitrose carrier bag caught in the wipers of a 4x4
and would it be outside a block of tenements with a front garden? Tricky thing this stereotyping!

Just watched University Challenge, neither team could answer any of the questions on Elvis. What are we teaching our young people these days?

They also failed on three questions on contemporary Scottish literature.

As I recall there was only one Scot out of all eight contestants. Why might anyone expect a knowledge of contemporary Scottish literature, unless you're including Harry POtter?

Why might you expect a knowledge of Greek Mythology, Roman historians, nineteenth-century UK politics, or any other subject you might conceivably be asked questions on?

As it happens I could probably tell you more about contemporary Norwegian authors than Scots ones, but regardless, every single work of fiction by a living UK author I've bought in the last twenty years has been by a Scot, with one exception. And the exception has lived in Italy for decades.

Is this that Weegie anti-culture thing again, or just the anti-Scotland thing? Both baffle me. What's it all about?
