HG Movie Critique.

I had the bright idea of beginning a thread of tips for movies to catch that may or may not be outside of the mainstream Odeon fodder that's fetched up these days.

The idea for the thread came to me after watching a movie recommended to me the other week.

As I was informed, it was a somewhat low budget Swedish horror flick by the name of "Låt den rätte komma in." (Let The Right One In.) and although I'm not a big fan of arty type subtitled movies I gave in to a moment of boredom and got hold of a copy.

Tell you what ... bloody glad I did.

What unfolded was an intriguing and captivating story of a 'love affair' of sorts between a 12 year old Swedish boy and an immature female vampiress who, as it turns out, has been 12 years old for a very, very long time.

Low on the almost slapstick gore that seems to be de rigueur these days the movie relies on a deep and involved examination of the relationship between the little creature of the nights' struggle to relate to her minions and the world outside her realm of experience which it appears she has deliberately constrained to whatever is entirely necessary for her survival until meeting the young boy.

The reasons for her breaking her own protocols don't become apparent until the end of the movie and, even then, the motivations aren't entirely clear as to whether or not they are selfish or circumstantial.

A great movie, highly recommended. If you have the time and the inclination I strongly suggest you put aside an hour or two and dip your toe in .. I'd be interested to hear what you think.

It got a good review in the Guardian last week.

It's on at the GFT all this week, so might nip along.

Good thread and good review mate. That film has been on my list for ages.

For every review could we get an IMDB link and maybe even a shot of the cover? Just an idea.

Blink and you'd have missed it.

There was a ten past six showing, so having nothing constructive to do I nipped along.

Thoroughly enjoyable, and I don't think I've ever gone 'aw, cute' at an ending which involved multiple dismembered body parts strewn around, before.

Good call, big man. :)

As you say, though, the ending is a tad ambiguous.

Yep Josef, but unlike some 'open ended' films it doesn't leave you frustrated, it does however leave you thinking. A good thing in my book.

I just watched this film.... wonderful ! thoughtful, touching, scary, everything most films are not . I hear that the author who wrote the book has a sequel in progress but it will not be released for at least four or five years, so the story is not quite over yet .
And now the bad news.... an american studio has bought the rights for an english language remake !!!
