Thanks Fossil.
Yes and glad to be off work tomorrow for the holiday.

Don't know what it's like with you Bridie but it's really cold in Belfast.
There's snow on the mountains and the rain is on.

More wet down here with a good few bright spells - we had hailstones yesterday 8O

Today we also had St Patrick arrive by helicopter on the Lough and was rescued by a Viking Longship and then the longest snake was carried by kids in the parade. Now we will have lots of Police Officers outside the pubs ::):

Valuation Rolls

Postby Monument » Fri Mar 29, 2013 4:36 pm

PRONI have put digitised versions of the Valuation Registers online. These registers were an assessment of every building and piece of land and its value. They are free to access. In the absence of historic census data for Northern Ireland (which was either blown up or pulped) they are a useful family history resource. However, you can only search by geographical area (as far as I can see) so you need to know where your Norn Irish ancestors were living, and only the head of the household is recorded.

Monument,

Looked up our house today in the Belfast Street Directory and there are people recorded as living here
back as far as 1890s. Strange to see some of the professions people had back then that you no longer
hear of nowadays.

Interesting to see some streets where houses have been renumbered or further houses have been built later on.

May try and trace some of the relations at a later date and thanks for the link.

Bridie,

Heard something on the radio today about the Crannog dig being at an end.
The site is to be concreted as part of A32 road project.

More than 4000 artefacts were found and some date back to 9th century.

Wouldn't have liked to be the person who found the body of woman who died 600 years ago.
They think she may have been a victim of foul play due to position of body.

Hi Dot :D

You'd think what with tourism being the only employer in this forgotten wee corner of the world that the powers that be would be on the look out for any possibility to add to the short list of fishing, drinking and fishing.

Lo and behold one of the finest archaeological finds for decades comes along and they virtually ignore it, concrete it over and put it to rest - again. Even with the added "mystery and intrigue" discovery of the 600 year old murder victim.

There's currently more excitement about Colin Farrell filming down here at Castlecoole.

Think I'm the only woman that hasn't been photographed with him - I'll live.

Hope all well up in the metropolis.

I think if I had as much trouble getting into a space I would have driven on.

I saw Glenn Patterson on my travels over the weekend.
He seemed to be buying champagne so maybe he had signed a deal with his publisher.

Have to confess I've never read any of his novels.

Bridie,

There is a programme on tonight about Enniskillen.
Just letting you know in case you want to watch it.
BBC2 Town with Nicholas Crane at 9pm.

I expect things are busy in Fermanagh with all the G8 preparations.

Thanks Dot I saw it :D

I was impressed- he did a great job in describing the town with all it's beauty and quirkiness.
Lets hope nothing is stirred next week.

I really enjoyed it too. I'm a big fan of Mr Crane ever since seeing the Map Man series.

They were well impressed with him here too. Very pleased with his portrayal of the town and with the production and photography.
The only criticism, speaking as a resident for the last eight years, is that it's not quite as forward thinking as he makes out. It has suffered for decades with unemployment and bad transport links, the latter being the biggest problem considering it has to rely on tourism as it's main industry. Investment in other types of industry stops way up the country and it's only with the G8 Summit coming that I've seen any interest and money. The reality is that young people go to Uni/college then stay away as there are no jobs here for them. I'm afraid they don't all do farming or horse husbandry.
