Thanks, Doorstop. :)

Josef, suicide rates for post-operative transwomen are about the same as for the general population.

Our campaigners use it as an argument to try and persuade health authorities to stump up for the cost of treatment.

The long term cost to society of a suicide is of the order of £1,000,000

The cost of treatment including surgery for a transwoman is of the order of £10,000.

It's a no-brainer.

I didn't and I had to book a flight with BA (not Baracus, obviously). Gatwick's not far from the hospital and BA should be able to handle me as they would a wheelchair-bound passenger.

Just need a good taxi driver to get me back from Glasgow Airport and lift my suitcase up the stairs.

At the risk of sounding like Dexter - could you point us towards the evidence for that?

I don't have the document to hand, but the source was the Scottish Government. I'll google for it later.

(sorry in advance for the diversion, Brigit....)

£175k of which is economic loss, and the remainder allocated to the number of years lost from a statistical lifespan, the definition of which is

The value of a statistical life

The LTSA estimated in the early 1990s that the Value of a Statistical Life for New Zealand was $2 million. That value was adopted for investment decisions in the transport sector. The estimate is based on willingness-to-pay, using survey data on the amount that members of the community are prepared to pay for reductions in the risk of a fatal road accident.

Or, as the rather clearer footnote says

‘Statistical’ here means that the value is not for some specified individual but instead represents the average amount that members of the community are willing to pay to save a life at random.

Good luck Bridie, for the sake of looking wrong, you have bigger balls than most people! Well done for your courage.

Surgery on your nether regions isn't a good thing. Hope your hospital food was better than mine.
