Bloody neds kicked my bin over this morning, blocking the pavement - a particular problem for my elderly and wheelchair-driving neighbours. Never mind, I got them with the long lens and reported them to the council. I copied the email to Strathclyde Police.

The Police phoned back about two hours later.

"We share your concerns Brigit, but next time can you phone us straight away so we can send a patrol car 'round?"

I didn't think the tipping of a bin worthy of bothering the police straight away. In Somerset, I'd just reach for the metal bar behind the door and frighten the little buggers a different shade of pale, then tell the village bobby next time he dropped in the pub.

It seems that Mr Plod likes to be straight on the scene to put the wind up 'em even if he can't do anything. It lets the little buggers know that both the neighbours and the police are on the case in the area and they'll move on somewhere else.

PETN's preparation involves the nitration of pentaerythritol with a mixture of concentrated nitric and sulfuric acid. The preferred method of nitration is the ICI method, which utilizes concentrated nitric acid (98%+) alone, as mixed acid can create unstable sulfonated by-products.

C(CH2OH)4 + 4HNO3 → C(CH2ONO2)4 + 4H2O

Pentaerythritol is blessed with a central carbon atom, upon which hangs four methyl groups each having a hydroxyl group.

It is essentially a cruciform and aggrandised interpretation of glycerine (propane-1,2,3-triol)

Nitrating the latter is best left to the loons (and I've known some); NO2 is given off in furious quantities. I've heard of fifteen year-old lads fleeing their bedrooms when reality hits home. Dad comes home to find he's lost his house and not a bailiff in sight.

Pentaerithritol Tetranitrate presents a reasonable compromise. It has a good deal more stability, yet it is one of the most powerful explosives known to man. And woman. :D

Mixed with a suitable plasticiser one can have Semtex.

It is still prone to percussive detonation, though, which is why Crazy Brigit keeps her lump hammers on the shelf below.

(Just a quick message for the spooks 8) 8) reading this thread: d'ye think I'd be so fuckin' stupid as to keep explosives *IN* the bomb shelter? I have enough trouble with the 'lectrics as is...)

I know one that is missing his right forearm. Is this the sugar/weedkiller combination?

I can see two of everything. Does that mean I've had two bottles wine?

Or four... ?

Yeah. I was on the way there and met myself coming back the other way with loads of bottles that I'd drunk earlier. Or later...

I'm not sure who'd set out first. Me or me.

I hope I didn't whack any neds on the way home .

We'd both get the blame. Would we get single cells?

I'm confused.

I don't remember writing that load of rubbish.

No, I think climbing back on the wagon will suffice.

At least the smoke alarm didn't explode this time, but there have been weird dreams.

Anyway, I have a pot of co-dydramol to combat the pain with.

Still no booze since St Patrick's day: the codydramol is nicely relaxing and doesn't give me a hangover, heebie-jeebies or exploding smoke alarms.

I've been talking to the medical people this last week and it looks like I might have a surgery date in late June. Of course we know what'll happen: they'll blow Shawbridge down while I'm up on bricks.
